 Topic: Any plum tree specialists on here

I have 2 plum trees about 70' apart. There is a mature Walnut tree between them. Every year they set on dozens of little green plums. Things will look good for a couple of weeks and them almost over night all the green plums will be on the ground. No wind or heavy rain to knock them off the trees. I do not remember the type of plums. They don't look wormy and I don't see any leaf damage on the trees. This has happened for the past 5 or 6 years. If I can't figure out what is wrong they are gonna get cut down and burnt for firewood. There are 40+ bee hives sitting beside them so pollination should be good. The plums set on well after the last frost.

I ain't a plum tree specialist, but I do know that anything planted under a walnut tree will have problems. Maybe you're thinking about removing the wrong tree?

HD6GTom: If these are Black Walnuts Trees - look up the definition of Juglone.

Our recent planted Peach did the same thing this year, peaches were growing and looked good, next day ALL were down. Local greenhouse operator asked of Walnut close or if was using a material as 2-4-D or Roundup near to it, said sometimes just a late frost can cause such.

Probably the Walnut. I can't grow anything worth saving near them.

We have had the same thing happen to our cherry tree. We only have one, but it is supposed to be self fruiting. It is a profusion of blossoms, but when the fruit gets the size of a pencil eraser it all falls off. Planted about 6 years ago. It is planted about 6 feet beside our driveway and 2 winters ago our son was driving thru a big snowdrift and his truck slid off the driveway and he ran over the tree. Broke half of it off. I thought maybe the reason it won't bear is because it has been traumatized, but maybe not. I would talk to the Iowa State Extention Service before cutting anything down.
