Stopped in Iron Mountian Michigan on Tuesday to see the Cornish pumping engine on display. It is truly amazing what was built with the technology of the day and without computers. The vertical steam cylinders turned the 40' dia flywheel and the bob raised and lowered the pump shaft that was connected to 8 pumps approx 200' apart and could pump about 200 tons of water a minute from 1500'

Just think of the bearings on this unit to carry a 150 ton flywheel let along the shaft and other working parts . More than likley plain bearings , just a oil film on babbit or brass.
