Last week I sealed the deal and brought home a 1968 170 diesel. I had known about the tractor for a while. I was going to talk to the owner who was one of my customers about it and he got sick. I figured it was not going to end well and I didn't want to appear to be a vulture so I waited. He passed and after what I felt was an appropriate amount of time I went to talk to the widow because I had heard she was ready to sell. Someone in the family had suggested the value of the tractor to be rather high as in full restoration value high. I looked at the tractor and as bad as I wanted it I walked away and didn't make an offer because being self employed in a small community I have to protect my reputation. A year later and word was sent that she wanted me to come back and look at it again and was confused why I didn't make an offer the first time. It was explained to her I didn't want to make her mad and I didn't want to appear to be taking advantage of her. She had contacted two other people one of them was the dealer that sold it to her husband new and they put her in a more realistic ballpark on the price. So the good news is after two years of waiting the tractor came home with me last week. The widow had called her son and they were happy I was getting it because they didn't want to put it on the internet and have strangers coming around. So it was a gamble to wait on it but by waiting I didn't let my emotions get to me and I got the tractor for 1/3 of what she was wanting before. As I was leaving she asked if I was going to restore the tractor. I told her I probably would repaint it sometime but I was buying it to work with and she smiled and said good that's what her husband would have wanted. I was happy it ended the way it did.

You did good by not being disgusted about the price and walked away. it must be worth the wait. Congrats and your good name is still intact. |

Thanks fellows and I will try to post some pictures later this evening. And am I reading it right that I got Shameless's seal of approval? That's worth more to me than buying the tractor
Just picking Shameless I search this forum twice a day to see what kind of antics you are up too. Thanks for the kind words.

I gotta' tell you, I've heard guys bragging about scoring some collectable car/truck/tractor from an old widow....it always goes something like, " I got her down to $xx, she didn't know what she had...."! That has always stuck in my craw! and I've told one or two how I thought
Anyways, congratulations RB, ya' did good! Oh ya, congratulations on the tractor, too |

Years ago I read about a "barn find" 1967 Shelby Mustang. The owner was a young guy who made a bunch of money somehow and bought the car. Parked it in his mom's barn and died a few months later. She didn't want to deal with it so just let it sit in the barn. Finally decided to sell the farm and called someone to look at the machinery to get a value. He saw the Mustang and told a collector friend about it. The collector had been looking for one just like it for years. He asked her what she wanted for it. The lady had the bill of sale and asked if he would give her the price her son paid, $5 or 6 thousand, He said No, I can't do that, the car is worth a whole lot more then what it sold for new. He suggested she talk to a couple reliable car experts who came up with a price in the $20,000 range. He paid it, made both the buyer and seller happy. The car is now worth two or three times what he paid for it.

Slip a new set of front tires on her and she outta be good for another 25 years. You got a great little tractor there. I put quite a few pair of Alliance rears on tractors that size. They worked good.

Looks like original paint! Straight tractor with decent rubber! I would drive that! Good job bringing that one home! Thanks for the pictures.
