The production numbers show that in the WD/WD45 series, they built far more numbers of wide front ends than they did narrow fronts. I've only seen one wide front in our area (I've seen untold 100s of narrow fronts). If they sold more wide fronts it sure wasn't around here. Where are all the wide fronts?

I have one with wfe and I only know of one other one around here. People will kill to get one with wfe around here......mine use to be narrow front....Grandpa put a 3 bolt front end under it.....supposed to be 4 bolt front end for the year it is.....can't find one though.

How do you tell the difference between the 3 and 4 bolt FE? (Besides the obvious)
Where are the bolts at?

I personally prefer the narrow front. I'm looking for a narrow front to go under my D19 now (will trade a good wide front).
Went back and looked at the numbers and I'm wrong. There were more nfe WDs than there were wfe. 112,345 nfe, 29,846 wfe.
There were more WD45 wfe though. 38,136 nfe, 50,895 wfe.

The bolts are on the front of the cast housing that is between the frame rails.

I don't know if those numbers are right. I've never seen many WD45's with wfe compared to the number of nfe around here (north central IL), but the factory installed ones I've seen usually have factory power steering.

More nf in my area than wides. But, our neighbor did buy a new 1952 WD wide front, the only one i remember. We bought it to chore with on his sale. It was so wore out when we sold it to another neighbor about 1970. Dad's story was it was too hard to put front mounted cultivators on a wide front and that was the end of story. We also put a mounter picker on our 45. So my guess is, it depended on the region and intended use of the WD, as to nf verses wfe.

That seems very odd to me. Any tractor around here that was made before 1960 has a narrow front. My WD45 has the interchangeable front axle but is set up narrow front.

Think about how much row crops saskatchewan and other western provinces do, there's none because you didn't need them for wheat. That's also why you guys have alot of standard tractors

OK, quick survey of WDs/WD45s for sale on Tractorhouse.com that show or mention which front setup they have (and this is a miniscule sample, so not sure this has much validity)...
20 WD45s, 9 have wide fronts
13 WDs, 3 have wide fronts

I suppose the reason we don't have very many wfe WD & WD45's here in IL is the same reason we don't see WF's and D17 wheatlands or any wheatlands for that matter. We used to cultivate everything multiple times and before 3pt hitches (or the D series in our case) everyone used mounted cultivators. We used rear mounted cultivators starting with the series I D17 with an AC four row 38" snap coupler. After we changed to 30" rows and I started farming, I bought a used AC 8 row 30" hyd fold 3pt to use on the series IV D17, Dad was already using the XT to cultivate with a Noble 8 row 30" danish tine Before that we had 4 row mounted cultivators on the WD45 and before that on a John Deere A.

Most of the WD45's I've seen out here in the Dakotas are wide fronts. I grew up in central Minnesota and saw mostly NF's and a lot of them still had the cultivator brackets on them. I've never seen a cultivator out here. The distrabuation of wide fronts was mostly regional usage based.

Only narrow front A C's in this area of the country are WC's and C's I know of one narrow front WD here and it was brought in from Minn. by a local collector a couple of years ago. All WD and WD45's sold here were wide front. We don't do much row crop here.

You know, I don't think Pop ever ordered a wide front WC, WD, WD-45. We were forced into the WF when the D series came out but Pop still persisted in ordering nf tractors. Even the D series.

I got a 45 wide front, One of my neighbors has 2 45 wide fronts. another neighbor has 1 Wide front 45, i can think of at least 10-15 45's in this area with wide fronts. We have quite a large pocket of wd and wd45's in Northeast Kansas. It seems like everywhere you look there is an old Allis. I will say the majority of wd's around here are narrow front. I do know that the Sales Block that was Northeast Ks during the 50's was one of the highest selling blocks. That explains quite a bit...lol

Here in Indiana most of the WD's had narrow fronts, with the coming of the 45's there was a shift to the wide front and most of the laters ones were equipped that way.

If you look at the dealer registry you will see a post by Frances Curless. Her husband, Charles Curless was the block man for the NE part of Kansas and it was a good block. He is related to the owner of this site. Charles' brother Frank "Happy" Curless was my Granddad and the dealer in Liberal, MO. In 1955 he was a 3 star dealer. Both Missouri and Kansas had a bunch of good dealers and that is why there are so much orange equipmetn still here.

This is my favorite AC tractor. In our area still probably more nf than wf, even for the 45, but the wf can be found with little effort. I have 5 WDs, all nf, two with factory ps, 6 WD45s, 5 wf, four with factory ps, but I have 4 wf to put on them. The WDs are gas, distillate and LPG/gas; the 45s are gas, diesel,distillate and LPG/gas.
