I was talking to a guy who swore he put a d17 crank, rods and pistons in a wd block is that possible? since the wd is a 4x4 bore and stoke and the d 17 is a 4x4.5 bore and stroke thanks

I think those parts might fit a WD45 engine (226 cu)....and that WD might have had a 45 engine put into it at some point in it's life.

Not knowing for sure if you can mix and match the heads, but the WD45 engine (226cu) shoudl have a 4" tall head. The WD engine (201 cu) should have a 3" tall head.
Also, the WD engine, has a large metal plate mounted on the Right side of the engine, that takes up the whole length of the engine.
one confusing factor that I had experience with, is the Leroi 201 engine that doesn't have that plate, but comes in a 226 or a 201 configuration. the shorter head, and the plate over the right side of the engine, "should" tell you that it is a WD engine, not a WD45. |

I'm pretty sure the D17 crank has different size main journals on the crank. That said, a WD45 crank is the same stroke as a D17 and will drop right in, along with any of the 226 engine kits. The kit in my WC is for a 170.

Everything will fit except the crank. You would need a WD45 crank to fit the WD block.

Charlie wasn't the first 17's the same crank as the 45 or E motor. I thought the change in lower ends came later like Ser. 2 or so.

Is it the mains are different size or the thrust main is not in the same position? I was thinking this came up some time back and it was the thrust main was not in the same position.

No D-17 had the smaller crank from the factory. The Nebraska tested the first D-17 in 1957 and it had the big crank witch has 3'' bearings. Although the first D-17s had the WD45 style lube system.

They will interchange but are not exactly the same. WC and WD rods have shims. WD45 and D17 have no shims. The newer the rod the stronger it is. Many different forging numbers over the years and I imagine the weight increased a bit as well.
