Got a wd puller, removed the hydraulic pump, wondering if I have to refill with hydraulic fluid or if I can use 80-90w gear oil for the bearings

Seems to me the gear lube is higher priced than Un HyTran but I don't know why it wouldn't work, just might lose a 1/4 of a HP with stiffer fluid to turn ???????

While the cases have a little bit of separation, the PTO drive, hand-clutch housing, and transmission/axle will all wind up mixed a little bit. With no PTO gears and no hydraulic pump, the only thing left in the oil is hand-clutch and transmission.
If you've deleted the hand clutch, too, the only thing left in that big cavity is the shaft, so you could probably leave it dry. If you still have any gears or the hand clutch, I'd leave hydraulic oil in it. I don't think the hand-clutch would be all that grippy in 90-wt.

Ten Amendments, Ten Commandments, and one Golden Rule solve most every problem. Citrus hand-cleaner with Pumice does the rest.

The hand clutch has been pinned so it won't slip, everything is still in there. Ran gear oil for two years before the rebuild and the hand clutch never slipped. What I'm wondering is if the bearings need hydraulic oil or if gear oil will work. The pto and it's hardware is still there and we still use the tractor to turn a grain auger.
I say just put in hydraulic oil but my grandpa wants to know if gear oil will work

Had this tractor completely tore down to the frame, getting it put back together now, cases and rear end all have a small half inch hole about an inch above the bottom of each compartment
