The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration said it’s going to try again to mandate speed limiters for heavy trucks and other commercial vehicles.

FMCSA announced it intends to publish a supplemental notice of proposed rulemaking to follow up on a 2016 proposed rule that was jointly issued by FMCSA and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. That 2016 proposal never made it to a final regulation, and never came up with a proposed maximum speed, although the proposal discussed possible limits of 60, 65, and 68 mph.

This new proposal will require interstate motor carriers operating trucks with the capability of governing maximum speeds to limit those vehicles to a speed “to be determined by the rulemaking” for the service life of the vehicle.

Life lesson: If you’re being chased by a lion, you’re on a horse, to the left of you is a giraffe and on the right is a unicorn, what do you do? You stop drinking and get off the carousel.

Why not extend this proposal to all vehicles that travel on the roadways? Remember, ‘its for the children’.
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

Speed limits of 60, 65 or 68. Drove hundreds of thousands of miles in ungoverned trucks, Pete's, K-woppers and freight shakers. Stupid laws proposed by stupid people. Betcha not a one of these proposers got even a hundred miles of riding in a truck let alone driving one. Their just people proposing and mandating things to justify their unneeded jobs so they can say look at me, look at me. I passed yet another law, my job is necessary. Idiots

This, just like ELDs are being pushed by the huge bottom feeding trucking companies. They can't, don't or won't hire drivers that have the ability to handle equipment at ANY speed. Their answer is not to raise the bar for their mess but to lower everyone else to their level. I am so ever thankful I retired from trucking.

Amen brother. Get the wages up where they should be. Stop pushing the idiots through these half assed driving schools that are not smart enough to push a shopping cart let alone drive a truck. It's all about fill that driver's seat with a body, doesn't matter if they shouldn't be , just do it and turn them loose amongst the 180 mph production cars out there and women putting on their make-up. Throw in the others that are all in a hurry to get home or get to work on time. They ain't got a clue

BIG deal, companies have been limiting trucks to dangerously slow top speed since the fuel crisis of the 70s. One of the first computer controlled trucks I ever drove had a top gear limit of 55MPH but in 9th it would do 60 MPH, what good was that?
How about doing that to every vehicle that gets tags?
Just watched a TV program yesterday about installing SPEED cameras along the lower part of the JFX in Baltimore City. It is a dangerously curvy section at the start of the interstate leaving  downtown Baltimore where a car was clocked OVER 175 MPH !

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

BIG deal?? Obviously you have never driven from El Paso to Texarkana at 55 mph trying to buck a steady 40 mph wind. I can see limits on speeds for EVERYONE from Pennsylvania east and North Carolina north for the few drivers that can't seem to understand their right foot is the only governor that should be needed

Put a Schneider truck a JBHunt and Swift truck side by side on a 3 lane highway and see how long they hold up traffic trying to pas each other going 60mph. You have interstates with 70 mph speed limits and trucks in the right lane holding up traffic. Before they had eld , a local place had 2 factories but guys would have to fudge log books to make around trip in a day, the with the elds the route has changed to almost all interstate driving and with a drop and hook they can make a round trip. Lower speed limit and they can't make. My freightliner farm truck will run 80+ never drive that fast but when you are in a 65 zone and people piss you off you can get out of their way.

Don’t be surprised at who all is behind proposing such Tom Foolery. The Teamsters, for one comes to mind right away. The IBT has forgone the concept of doing what is best for the member’s individual earnings, they have pivoted to only advocating for more dues paying members, to do the same amount of work, while member earnings are stagnant.
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

Followed a 5th wheel camper in the U.P. of Michigan going 55 in a 65 for 25 miles till I got to a passing lane. The pickup and 5th wheel stepped on it to pass the car that was holding up the traffic. There was probably 10 to 15 cars behind me pissed off. I was up to 75 trying to get passed the slow car before I ran out of passing lane. Slowed down again because when the passing lane ended the slow car slowed down to 50 in front of me. Ten miles later at the next passing lane I was ready for the butt head and ran it up over 80 and passed the idiot. After passing the idiot I eased it back to 66 and every car that was stuck behind me all that time passed me, tooted the horn and gave me the thumbs up. And they wonder why my blood pressure is through the roof. Happens all the time. Don't miss it a bit.

The only good I saw out of the Covid lock down was no cars on the road! When driving truck the Police I would meet all waved and smiled. No problem waiting to pull onto formerly busy roads. Then we opened back up and everyone was driving like they were mad or have a death wish! I gave up driving transport this spring. My sanity is more important!

I was thinking also there are times and places they should regulate speeds on all vehicle, but that would infringe on people's right to drive as fast as they want to.
