I was changing the oil and filter every year... Got a sickle and wood mower "B"s that get about 25 hours a year... I have changed that to keep the filter for a couple years.. they never get dirty... Might stretch out the oil change also.
I have been using a good 10w30 motor oil in several small tractors for years.

Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Rotella SAE30 is available locally at Walmart and other auto parts store. Especially designed for older tractors with high zinc.

Get some 15-40 at any truck store or TSC. Yes Shell is hard to get or at least the tier 4 stuff is. Our shop got of a bunch of Shell tier 3 that they are selling a bit cheaper. I got a pail of that. Perfect for the older units - don't need the latest spec for these old girls. Get some Mobil or whatever is in stock! The tier 3 Shell is in a black pail instead of the yellow and white pail.

if your running your tractor HARD and over 250 hours per year, you might consider the zinc........ if your running 2 hour every other week to cut the grass 6 months out of the year.... go with the 10w 30.

For older tractors, I would recommend Mobil Delvac 1200 series. Available in 15w40, and 30wt. Find a ExxonMobil distributor, they should have it in their warehouse.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

Finally bought some oil and zinc additive . Got my tractor up to 180 degrees . Pulled the drain plug and what first ran out looked the coolant to me ? Would coolant be in the bottom of the sump ? If it's coolant what could be the cause ? Blown head gasket ? THANKS for any help with this ! Should say this is a Series 1 gas engine , 149 I think .

If it is coolant, it had to come from the radiator. Is the radiator LOW ??

I think it's a little low . Waited a min for it to cool down . Also when I first pulled the plug the oil/coolant felt cool and then got pretty hot . Thanks !

Just remembered back in March I noticed my oil fill/breather cap was pretty watery looking . Guess that was my first sign of a leaking head gasket ? Oh well
