Chatted with the company owner today, inquired if it would be possible to have a ‘company vehicle’ assigned to the service center I manage? Answer was ‘we’ll reimburse you for your vehicle usage, we have a bunch of pickups with blown motors that were assigned to this facility’.
What would be an appropriate ‘rate’ for usage?
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

IRS has a number per mile they use but for a reimbursement I think that would be the minimum as they are usually behind the actual inflation.

The supervisor’s, mechanics, company officers, all have company trucks they can drive home on their 7 days off rotation, some as far as 8-10 hours away, and they have a company fuel card.
At this particular facility, I am the only employee staffed there.

When I retired in 2018 the company was figuring the 2016 chevy Colorado that I used for company use and  going to and from work right around $12,000 a year and they paid for all repairs and gas but couldn't use it for personal use and was part of my pay. I always thought that I couldn't put a pickup on the road for that kind of money.

Keep in mind that there are requirements in tax law that have to be met, or an assigned vehicle can be considered "a benefit" and taxable.

A few years back, some of my co-workers turned in their assigned vehicles because they thought the tax was more than what driving the vehicle back and forth to work, was worth.

On the other hand, using your personal vehicle for work can actually work in your favor, for taxes.

I’m not asking for it to assigned to ‘me’, just would nice for there to be a company vehicle to use when I need to chase down parts, go to post office, take parts to the crews out in the oilfield, etc.
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

I use my work truck strictly work.
I snap a pic of the mileage first of every year.
I add time for gas and mileage when I go for material. We work on the honor system.
Wife and tax prep people deal with it at tax time. I keep trucks til the wheels fall off.

I get the IRS rate for miles driven.  Usually pretty standard running to/from the airport but it adds up.  Using the IRS rate keeps you out of a tax situation.  Probably the easiest to track and easiest for your company for reporting and pay out.  Typically you'd complete a weekly or monthly expense report with miles driven.

I've also had jobs where I received a straight up car allowance but with requirements that car had to be less than 100k miles and no older than 4 years old.....it was a Sales role so they didn't want you driving up in 20 year old car blowing smoke!

All in, those miles add up and does take from the value of your vehicle.  Stick to your guns and get whats owed you!

Pulled the pin this morning, sent an email to the company owner, and executive VP, that I was done. Logged out, got in my vehicle, locked the gate behind me, and waved at the camera.
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

"Take this job and shove it!" They will probably be calling and begging you to come back. Good employees are hard to find yet some employers still think they can treat them like crap. Congratulations on standing up for yourself.

Well, it was a manifestation of several things, first I promised my wife ‘I would give it 1 year’
after we moved. And it’s 2 years now. Was getting old chasing reimbursement money for miscellaneous small expense’s, also relating to that was told no
company credit card would issued to that service center. No COLA, again this year let
alone asking for a raise. Tired of living out of a suitcase, for $22.00 hour, and away from home for 14 straight days at a time.
It was time to part ways.

Wouldn’t surprise me at all if they call, it will be a few weeks tho before they do, as both oilfield crews are currently not in the area. I wish them well finding someone to run that service center for what they want to pay.
