I just filled the tank for my shop in mid December. Paid on 12/30/22, $2.1187 / gallon delivered on 260 gallons. About 19 cents / gal is for delivery and safety fees.
My shop is within 6 miles of where the delivery truck is parked. That truck covers up to 75 miles from there, I wonder what delivery fee is if living 60-75 miles away.

Our contract sealed at $1.84 this year.  We're only about a quarter of the way into our 2000 gallon pledge, we'll push in about 900 on Friday and be good 'till March, even if it's really cold and windy.

haven't used propane (cept on a grill) for over 45 years. don't see a propane truck in my area as much as we used to, others are prolly using some type of alterative things. propane fills for the grills is a little over $4./gal. use about 3 fills a year on that.

Got our delivery today... We asked for delivery of 1200, they had 1137 gal on the truck, so I told 'em that's good enough (no sense in making a dedicated trip for 61 gallons!).
$2133 with taxes... so $1.88/gal.

That'll be enough to easily get through the heating season, and leave plenty for hot water, emergency generator, and the grille through next fall.  Price will drop at some point during the summer, we might buy on the day-market to take advantage of it.  I don't remember what the price was last summer, but a couple ago, it was down to around $0.45/gal, so we filled 'em... Wink

I forgot to put in original post that I hadn't planned to work in shop this winter so didn't sign up for winter fill pricing so no discounts.

Folks,
You have some improved pricing. Propane was $2.59 when we filled up before Christmas.
Shop and house a nice and warm so we pay it.

I put in an order to fill my 250 gallon tank last week, and the gal tole me, over 100 gal is $2.84, less than 100, was like $2.94,, I hope it goes down some before delivery,,

theres another propane company tryin to get going here,, but I dont think they have their facilities up an runnin yet,, so maybe some competition will help ease those prices some

I use this for my LP tractors mostly...

We pre-buy for the winter. Get a better price that way. They fill when in the area. We have never ran out.

I signed a contract for 88 cents a litre here in Ontario. Will have to fill soon and it wil be 1000 litres or more. That should do me for the rest of winter. Funny thing is the non contract price is still lower! Lol. First time I ever signed but I thought this year it would work to my advantage. Oh well. Smile

Wow, Ed-  That's $3.34/gal!!!

So... Propane is C3H8... and it's a byproduct of petroleum refining and processing of natural gas.  The price variation we see, is more a function of how 'active' the refinery is at any given time... it is substantially a 'supply side' model, as refineries will NOT process petroleum based on demand for propane-  they'll sell off propane as they process crude or Natural Gas.  If they're running lots of oil for diesel, gasoline, lubricants and plastics industries, the cost of propane will be low.  If they're shut down, or running very low volumes due to economic or other issues, there won't be much propane, so price will go high.

Propane contracts, at least in MY area, are rather confusing if you don't understand WHY they run 'contracts'.

When I sign up for a contract for 2200 gallons, it's not actually a situation where I'm FORCED to buy 2200 gallons at that price... and I've had years where I didn't use HALF of that contract volume... and they only charged me for what I had delivered... which really confused the heck out of me, so I spoke with them about it, to make sense of it all.

When I sign the contract, I'm basically promising to buy at that rate, under the conditions identified on the contract, and my ESTIMATED NEED will be, say, 2200 gallons.

THEY take that contract, and the hundreds of others, and add 'em all up, take it to the financial office, who looks at it and decides WHEN, and HOW MUCH to 'lock in' on the petroleum futures market.  The finance office is basically working with their banking investors to arrange financial backing for the national petroleum market purchase.

Now, it doesn't stop there... they don't buy it all in one lot, they buy it in 'scheduled' timeframes... so like... a weekly, or bi-weekly delivery schedule, and if they have multiple receiving terminals, pipeline routes, truck transports, etc., it'll be all organized-out that way.

Once that purchase PLAN has been settled, they start taking deliveries AS LONG as they have adequate storage volume.

Then they make deliveries to their customers, and when there's day-purchase (non contract) customers knocking on their doors, they look at their stock and delivery obligations, figure out if they have enough excess to sell off-contract, and set the price partly according to the national non-contract price, but also weight it based on their excess availability.

It's basically no different in say... listening to the farm report prices for March beans...

The greatest 'cost' is transportation, so location of a refinery or pipeline is where the cost will be significantly lower than places where it isn't.

Yes Dave our fuel prices up here are high! All of them - gas, diesel, propane and oil. Gasoline now is $1.43 approx per litre and changing daily. Canadian dollars of course. Last week was #1.33 in my area and during the summer was about $1.75 per litre. Tough times for many young people in particular.
Just to clarify that 1.43 is $5.43 per US gal.
