What is the "max" rpm's that a diesel engine in a p/u with an auto tranny will get to ? I had a guy pull out in front of me this afternoon and he really stomped on it to get ahead of me but it sure sounded like it was hitting 4 grand (my windows were down) ?? Maybe that's not out of the "norm", I've never been in or driven one. Thanks

depends on who 'tunered' it....and of course overall design and parts...
but a run-of-the-mill ... maybe tops out at 5000 RPM
diesel burns slower than gas which is one limiting factor....

7.3l Fords will hit 3800 easily.  6.0 and 6.4 are shorter stroke engines can turn faster.  These are not HD Diesels.

Musta been one of those power JOKES. They sound like a constipated Sumo wrestler after eating cheese sandwiches for the last month. Then have some kid remove  the muffler and add a tuner chip and it will look like the orange-blossom special rounding the mountain and still they won't  get out of a VW bug's way LOL
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.

Duramax l5p redlines at 3450 rpm. I've seen guys at the track claim 4000 but they don't seem to last long usually break other drive line parts before anything happens to the engine

7.3 bout 3500 or so but wouldnt stay together for many yards IF you had it open!
mine runs 60 at 2100 --- I usually never run it much past 1500 to 1750. ---runs better in that range and gets around 16 mpg,--so why hammer it?

Sadly Shameless, it was pretty clean exhaust Confused ,I could definitely smell it though WinkWink. This was a pretty new GM product BTW. I am recalling me as a passenger in a vehicle when the driver "kicked it down" into passing mode on an automatic with a gasser and hitting 5500 rpm's. I didn't know if a modern diesel could hit those rpm's in "passing gear" Shocked

RPM Limits on a Duramax is roughly 3200.  Can sound quite high and not be.  Tuners can over ride the limiter, to the owner be cautious as to how long, how many times and how much load when pull that stunt.

My 2016 Duramax has downshifted to 4500 with the exhaust brake on, had me worried....only had 1000 miles on it at the time. Didn't seem to hurt it.
