being bored this moring i done some research on the tractor models at tractor data and it is easy to see why the company was having troubles by the early eighties, and the company hey-day was definatly in the late 40's thru the early 60's, with the wc being the most produced model
most of the later tractors where being built in small numbers for a factory that was that large

D19s were only about 14,000, not 140,000. Looks like the WD production #s got used for D19s also. When they closed the tractor factory it was way out of date, the foundry had been closed a few years before cause it was also out of date and wouldnt meet new standards. |

I had a Milwaukee resident tell me the same Skip. He had friends that worked at AC. The feeling among the serfs was the limits of the facilities had already been met for some time. The used alot of man power moving units and assemblies in some awfully round- about way to get the 8000 series tractors pieced together. Alot of the same assembly stations that put WC's together was still putting 8070's together. It was taking way too much manual labor compared to other mfgs.
Racine and West Allis aren't that far apart. He knew people that worked at both places. There was some night and day differences on how things were done. Edited by Nathan (SD) - 08 Aug 2011 at 11:40am |
