    Posted: 14 Jan 2023 at 10:42am
I own a 1957 wd45 that my grandfather bought brand new. He installed a charlynn power steering on it but it keeps cutting the water pump bypass hose. My thought are to get some fittings to allow me to shorten the hose or install a wd thermostat housing and block off the bypass. I would rather bloxk off the bypass unless someone thinks that would be a bad idea.   Any help would be great.

Can't you remove a chunk of that hose and splice a piece of 3/8" pipe with two hose clamps?? The belt could rub the pipe without damage and may not touch the pipe anyway because it is smaller diameter than the hose ??

you really dont need a bypass hose... thermostat should have a pin hole in it which will allow pressure on both sides to stabalize, small amount of hot water the pass thru, and gradually let the system warm up without shock...
Like them all, but love the "B"s.

Been a while since I looked at mine. Is the pulley what's rubbing? Longer belt? I just know I don't have that problem.

Had that problem on my wide-front 45. Narrow front had a steel pipe bent so that the rubber was pretty short. If the belt hits the steel, it doesn't seem to hurt anything. I took a pipe nipple and bent it to form and cut to length like the one on the NF. I cut some pieces of round stock and put them inside the nipple to keep it from kinking. Heated and bent to form. Actually got a working part  on the first try.

How did you arrive at this conclusion?

You really need to verify your stated info before making such a dumb statement.

If the Bypass Hose wasn't required , why do a lot of Engines have one ?

How much Coolant could actually flow through that Pin Hole ?

Is a By-Pass hose required ? ABSOLUTELY

See attached Link

What does a water pump bypass hose do?

All engines that run a thermostat need to have some type of bypass provision to avoid localized hot spots, minimize the chance of steam pockets developing, promote even and rapid warm-up, and prevent water-pump cavitation
