 Topic: P/U Rear Axle Fail ?

I drove past a yard this afternoon that had multiple "cones" along the road up to a parked p/u and flatbed trailer. I just assumed that some type of landscaping work was being done until I got closer  , the rear driver tire/wheel was UP a foot into the wheel well at a 45* angle and protruding outwards at least 10"s and the bumper (drivers side) was on the ground  . This happened to be a 3/4 ton chevy about 8-10 years old. Any idea of what might have happened to the poor guy?

Broken lug bolts from the gorilla on the impact wrench or the axle broke where it comes out of the axle housing.

They used to have a big snap ring on the inner end of the axle. At 3-400000 miles they sometimes wear out. The axle will move out like you said. I do not know it the later units had the same design.

If it is a full floating axle, Hubert is probably correct. If not, could be either Tom or Hubert's guess. 3/4 ton, probably full floating

Someone forgot either the square cut key, or the snap ring that holds it in. Those AAM rears have a big retainer that threads on like a nut.

Thanks guys. All I know is I felt bad for the poor guy, it looked like pictures of the CIH 2300 series combines with their r/h drive tire at "cab level"

BILs 2000 GMC K2500 is NOT a full floating rear axle, flange type like a half ton, Weight packages can be light or heavy dependent of model type and year to get a full floater. That said I see all manner of self determined home mechanic do brakes on full floating axles and never pull a hub, bad idea as to inspect the bearings is almost a necessity as badly as we abuse light trucks these days, if brakes are shot that means a great deal of heat delivered to the hubs and bearings where the grease never really fully recycles to the rear end.
