Hello,
Does anyone know why the power steering valve would continue to push oil up the steering column even after having replaced the seals? Started leaking a year ago. Upon disassembly the quad ring was hard and cracked. Replaced the seals and farmed with the tractor no problem. Get the tractor out this year & once again got a bath of hydraulic oil. Upon disassembly can't see anything wrong with the seals. Thanks! -Jimmie @ JAMSI

The steering valves used in basically all of the Allis products that I have been around are usually very trouble free. The quad ring is almost always the only problem. I would try sealing it again, myself. Used ones should be plentiful if you want.

I know time is getting away from me, but I think I've probably only replaced a couple dozen quad ring seals in 45 years. Never replaced one single Char-Lynn steering orbitrol...NOT ONE !! And I never had to redo one for leaking after I replaced the quad seal at the top. I've never completely disassembled the orbitrol either. Always just the quad seal, an Oring and a dust seal. I'd question the quality of your repair parts, I guess. When I was an AC company rep, I had an Oliver/White/Allis dealership that I called on. They replaced Char-Lynn orbitrols on Oliver's all the time for steering issues. Never on an Allis. The Olivers hydraulic system must have been dirty compared to the AC's.

Last year when I replaced the quad-ring, dust seal, and o-ring, I used genuine AC parts. Maybe they had been on the shelf too long and had deteriorated. I replaced these items again this past week with another genuine repair kit from the dealer. I got everything cleaned up and the steering valve back together. I went out this afternoon and started mulching using that tractor and all seems to be good at this point. I sure hope it stays that way. That is a lot of work removing the hood to access the valve not to mention the mess of oil in the cab that has to be cleaned up. Thanks for offering your advice. I was afraid there might have been other issues in the hydraulics creating back pressure in the steering valve causing the seal to fail. Thanks again.

There is about 325 psi of back pressure created by the power director/PTO clutch circuit. If that back pressure for some reason would ever exceed say 600 psi (maybe less) it will explode the power director clutch itself. So, my point is the design is for there to be a certain amount of pressure backing up against the steering orbitrol.
