I dont know much, but pushing a pile of dirt uphill and you kill it, your 3-71 will run backwards.

The unit I had was a 1948 HD7W (wide) and spent the first lifetime pulling a scraper for Des Moines County, Ia.  We put a Baker Blade on it and used the rear hydraulic unit for lift power.  When it lurched backwards that day and started up the wrong way, smoke came out of the oil bath air cleaner and it sounded funny.  Pulling the clutch I was surprised to go backwards.  I killed it, restarted and pushed the pile up the hill, this time at a higher RPM.
