My new toy from last fall seen first real duty today.Hyd and trans both use Dexron. Tranny was full and hyd was just up in the sight glass for "cold" level. 4hrs later the hyd is filling sight glass to top of "hot" level and tranny is barly on the stick.CRAP!! Hyd pump is stacked on front of trans pump so I'm guessing trans supply pump is pushing oil into first section of hyd pump.For now I guess I'll drain off excess hyd and refill trans to finish little project.Is this a common happening? Doubt it,just my luck.Over the winter while tending to odds and ends I found ball brg cage pieces in the tranny sump so there's a project coming.The old mechanic I talked to said that brg is likely from one of the top shafts.My guess is the two problems are related.Any opinions welcome.

friend has a 645 that does the same thing. previous owner ran a line from hyd tank to dump into trans when it got overfull  he hasnt pin pointed the problem yet but suspected the same thing

Ha! Talked to mechanic from back when and his memory is a little foggy because so many years since workin on em but he did say that trans pump or steering pump can both take oil out of trans...also hyd and steering pump can put oil in the trans!LOL About impossible to diagnose who's the culprit!!!

If you wish to get longer life out of your transmission use a heavier oil than Dextron trans. fluid. Metal to metal protection is relatively low with trans. fluid. The thinner the oil the faster they wear. I talked to a guy that had a trans failure in an Allis loader when it was only two years old. He was running 10W oil and maybe the climate for part of the year required him to use thinner oil but when he consulted with the Allis dealer at the time he was told to use 20W (apparently not available now). He never had a trans. failure ever again. In my 745 loader I always used 30W motor oil in the tranny, for Pacific North West conditions that works fine all year. It also gives you better pressures in an older machine. This side note isn't going to fix your problem but a heavier oil may slow down the leakage past the seal that may be giving you the problem.

I was fiddling around the net looking for info on the Allison tranny in mine and found a place in Texas that remans em and they were saying use 15w40 oil.Guess they'll work on about anything. AW32 hyd oil is 20wt.Think that's what the rep said.

Allison agents here say 15w40 engine oil also, unless money has become a logistical problem for you, in which case, using synthetic dexron will rid you of large amounts of it.
