    Posted: 12 Jan 2014 at 8:54pm
I figured better ask on here for any advice or help. Dad has a 1963 HD 11EP that he's been trying to get started but she wont fire. I don't know how much ether he has used on it already. The back ground story on this thing is it was parked outside for about 14 years until I finally convinced him we needed it running, it almost started right up after sitting that long. We got the problem fixed that it had, which was the reason why it was parked. Then it stared to get water in the oil, so it was parked again. So now when he is trying getting it going again this time, he cant get it to fire. Its been sitting for about 6 years again but in a shed this time. The fuel lines have been blown out so they are not clogged. Now he is getting the idea to just put a completely different motor in it, which doesn't really make sense. What all is needed to be done to get it started? It turns over but that's it. Any advice, tips or any info period would be of help since this thing was built a little before my time. Sorry for the long post.

I'm not fimilar with that model but it sounds like it isn't getting fuel, have you blead the injectors? Thats where I would start, if you cant get fuel to them then trace it backward and see where you do have fuel, it could be a shut off problem too,

Can you get it to fire when cranking if you spray some either(start spray) into the intake?
Have you cracked open a fuel line and cranked it over to see if fuel comes out?

He's had this thing running on either, there is fuel up to the pump, but I don't thing there is any coming out of the lines from the pump on. Could something got out of line with the pump just setting?

I would check the fuel shut off on the pump, I don't know if its electric or mechanical but make sure its working properly, if it is then I would say it sounds like the pump is the problem

Been sitting that long could have sheared a pump drive from the internals freezing together or contaminants causing them to rust. Get the engine up on timing marks(on flywheel), make sure you are on Cyl.1 TDC compression and check the timing indication on the pump. I know the engine timing marks are on flywheel but uncertain of the location for injection pump markings.

Loosen but do not remove each of the fuel lines at the injector. Watch for fuel as someone cranks the engine. Whenever I work on an engine that has set for more than a year I pre oil it first. The easiest way is to tap into the oil pressure regulator or the oil pressure gage. I use a portapower filled with motor oil. But you are past that point already since you have been turning it over.

sounds like the plungers in the pump are stuck due to sitting in old fuel. Worst case it is seized, and broke the rotor. The DC pumps don't have a weak point in the driveshaft to break, the splined end of the rotor just disintegrates. guessing a 63 would be a roosa master pump.

If the plungers stuck how can they be loosed? Would taking the pump off and just having it gone throw be worth it? Could I take it off my self or have a pump man do it? Its not my money being throw at it and its hard to explain and convince my dad on how to fix things.

Look at your pump for a ID tag, if has a horizontal delivery it is a Stanadyne or Roosa Master, will need to get the timing marks aligned on the engine for no.1 and pull the pump. Will need to go to a rebuilder as Ed and run somewhere around $600-700.

as DMILLER said, and the only way to free the stuck plungers is to tear down the pump, and soak everything in heavy solvent. Then re-assemble and calibrate. I can't believe an HD11 isn't worth a $700 pump rebuild.

Early EP will have the American Bosch pump.  It seems that pumps seize up much faster with "modern" fuel than they did years ago.

This would be what little we know about this. DMiller and Lazyts are probably close in our thoughts. On the Bosch (PSB style pump) I assume is on there, we have broken the plunger in the pump #12 in the parts diagram at least 2 different times from sitting to long. Once on an HD 11 Lanova style engine (with the help of a 4 foot pipe wrench on the drive shaft) And once on an HD6 engine. The plunger is pretty thin in one spot and just seems to magically brake in to. photo Mail0003_zpsab8e8bfe.jpg

If I can get time this weekend I'm going to investigate this pump. Its hard on these things to not run from what you guys are telling me. I think its a Bosch pump, or that what I remember it saying. As I said this isn't my money that is being spent, dad would rather find a completely different motor to put in rather than fix what is wrong. It gets to be a hectic situation at times. I really appreciate all the feedback

Couple of links that may help:

From Minn-Par's website, a PDF parts catalog for Roosta Master pumps:
http://www.minnpar.com/partbooks/Allis%20Chalmers%20Construction%20%26%20Fiat%20Allis/Misc/FUEL%20INJECTION%20PUMP%20%2370685399.PDF

American Bosch pumps (don't forget to follow the links to pages 2 and 3 at the bottom!):
http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/Ambac/AmbacMenu1.htm
This one is a series of HTML pages (72 of them!) each containing a single JPG image so it takes a while to look through them all or to try to download! I've saved all the JPG's and am going to convert to a PDF tomorrow. If anyone wants a copy, I'm happy to email it. (Edit: Friday, Jan 17: Just finished converting this morning and the file is 34.3MB. I've also split it into 5 PDF's ranging from 4MB to 8.3MB each which should be more manageable by email!)

Good Luck!
Andrew

I bought a rebuilt PSB pump for an old HD11E from Jobbers Inc. a few years ago.  (www.jobbersinc.com)  Don't know if they still have any or not.
