 Topic: M crawler: Bevel gear shaft leakage

Hi-I have slight leakage out of the transmission into the cavity where the clutches and brake bands are. I see there is Garlock packing that can be tightened up by turning the gland nut. What is a general practice on how far to turn those?

Terry quoting directly from my M service manual Turn packing gland nut to the right to tighten packing. Tighten gland nut only enough to prevent excessive leakage of oil.NOTE The packing should allow some oil to seep out around the hub so that the packing rings are lubricated to prevent rapid wear of the rings and scoring of the hub.Effective on (approximately ) tractor serial no M-13342 a new type non adjustable oil seal was used.

I like how specific the manual is  . Please remind me...how full is a person to fill the transmission/rear end..is it to be up the to the fill neck at the back of the machine?

Terry i will check my M service manual. Quote M transmission case QTS 12, final drive (each) QTS 5 Terry if your M has a dipstick on top of transmission use that to read level if not fill untill you can see it at the elbow on rear of transmission case ( under your hydraulic pump) Mark

Hi Mark-My truck rollers (bottom rollers on track roller frame) all had 5/8" thick spacers under them...seems some of them had orange paint on at one time. Have you seen another M with spacers? Note these spacers were even used on the larger diameter rollers (wrong ones for my crawler)

Yes Terry i have seen that before it was used over here if you worked on grassland or turf a lot it stops the front and rear of the tracks dragging round on turns and tearing up the grass it picks the track chains up cleaner.

Terry we sprayed ours with a light spray of WD 40 just to stop them from sticking up untill we worked them to polish them up But dont put oil on them.
