I'm 99% sure that article is inaccurate. I believe that prototype was a Bolens product, not a Simplicity. I have seen it quite a few times over the years, but never with it named a Wonderboy.

The Allis/Simplicity Wonder Boy, was a rear engine, with a, if I remember right, Planetary transmission. The early ones had a handle that you straddled to operate it. You pulled it towards you and held it, which tightened a belt, to make it move. You it right and left to steer it. The latter ones had a foot peddle you used like a clutch, and a steering wheel. But still used a rear engine.

The "Wonder Boy" came in two models--450 and 575. The 450 had a 4½ HP engine w/a 24" cut, the 575 I think had a 5¾ HP with a 32"? cut. There is still a Wonder boy regularly cutting grass in Arlington, Ohio and is branded as the "Oldest lawnmower in town"--circa 1963. R.Musgrave

Would take me 4 hrs to mow my yard with a 32” cut lol. Everyone was into the space race during that time period and a lot of things were to look like space craft. Pretty cool though.
