Has anybody found a good way to quiet down the whine in mid-range in a 6080? It seems like 90% of the field work i do is mid range 4th gear which is the loudest, and can get annoying after a few hours. Previously i've put in a new upholstery kit with a couple layers of sound dampener in the cab and on the floor, and it helped a little. Currently have the cab apart for some work and in the process of adding more sound dampener under the floor and behind the dash, and replacing the front cab bushings as they are shot. Also considering wrapping the shift levers in thick grip tape like you'd use on a baseball bat, my thought is they are a steel rod connected to the transmission so might just be resonating the noise right into the cab.
Outside of that, is there anything else that might help? From reading around it sounds like they are all loud in mid-range, and might be worse on early tractors which ours is. |

No experience with a 6080 but it could be worn cab mounts. We have replaced the ones on our 8010 a couple of times and it made a world of difference. It sounded like the tractor had transmission issues because with the worn cab mounts the noise eas amplified in the cab.

Dynamat under the floormat would probably help

I guess I'd be interested as to where you are reading around that tells you they "all" do this ?? I've never heard of this complaint, BUT I can't say all of the ones I've ever sold or serviced were used as a heavy used tillage tractor. On the gearshift wrapping, I'd prefer to unscrew the knob and slide heater hose over the shaft full length to cover it. I agree with the cab mount theory as a possibility.

hmm, wonder if a 'pool noodle' on the gear shift would work ? They do come in near PO#1 !

I've read some posts on here, in some Facebook groups, and had a conversation with a guy the other day that had one and his complaint was also being loud in mid-range. Only had this tractor for a few years so previous life and hours are unknown, but judging by some of the things i've had to fix it wasn't the greatest. Now its only used for hay, pulling a 60ft 800 gallon sprayer, and side-dressing.
Rubber hose on the shifters might be a good thing to try first, i probably have some fuel line laying around that will work. Hopefully the cab mounts help some, my 8050 had developed a pretty bad noise when you were on a hill. Eventually figured out the cab mounts were shot and letting the cab lean to the side and touch a hydraulic line. New mounts fixed that. |

If Mack says it is normal, it's the way it is. I've never had one complaint on 6070/6080 mid range noise, so that's all I know. Riddle me this: between my Dad and Uncle we had three WD-45's. In road gear full speed, one was a little noisy, one had a pleasant hum and the other was perfectly quiet. Which one was bad? which one was correct?? NONE of them ever failed or caused trouble.

Interesting topic. My 6080 seems to be quiet in all gears. Mid-4 is definitely the most used gear.

Hmm, sounds like some of these 6080's. Make me wonder if there was a difference in the transmissions, or if its a simply a wear thing in mid range since its probably where most of these tractors work. We've put a couple hundred hours on this tractor since we got it, and never had any mechanical issues or trouble. All gears and ranges shift easy, and oil seems fine.
Do you know what serial number it is? Next time i've got ours outside i'll have to take a video of it, mid-range sounds like it has straight cut gears, high and low ranges are quiet. |

I have 2 6080s that are 2wd and I'm the second owner on both. One has a cab and the other has a canopy. I haven't noticed any gear noise in the mid range on either. You might just have an odd duck of a tractor. The canopy vibration is my biggest noise complaint as the foam is gone.
