   I,M lookin for an honest opinion .. i am seriously considering trading my IHC 986 . ......that i bought new in 80 ....... for an AC 8010 ........ would i like the change ... i have never drove one ........
 i know most of us on here are color blind ..... just want some thoughts

you'd definitly like the powershift (if it is one) over the IH TA but your IH will start better in the cold, allis will probly do better on fuel and the cab will be way nicer I've run both and prefer the Allis but would be best if you could drive one for awhile first and see what you prefer...would be hard for me too trade anything I bought new.

Both your IH 986 and the AC 8010 have right at 107 PTO HP. Does the AC have something that your IH does not (MFWA,cab,duals)?? Another thing you may want to look at is the number of hours that the AC and your IH has on them, it may be a better idea to go with the one that is farthest away from needing an engine rebulid or just had one. Another thing is the age, their isn't much difference in age but the last IH 986 was built in 1981 and the first AC 8010 was built in 1981. So technically I guess you would be getting a newer tractor.

I have a kind of close comparison, spent a lot of time in a 1086 IH and an 8050 AC, mostly baling or pullin the feeder wagon with both. Usually come out of the 1086 cussing, and out of the 8050 smiling. Darrel

Not sure you will like the performance of the 8010 in comparison to the 986.  Engine has less displacement (301 vs 436) and the 8010 weighs more, so that will make it seem doggy in some conditions, especially going down the road pulling something; in addition to not having as fast a road gear as the IH to begin with...

You could be right about the weight but the 301 is turboed and the 436 is not. The 301 is a hot performer in my book and the creature comfort differences make a no brainer to me but I'm pretty darn prejudice. I have spent time in a 1066 and it does start real easy but I definitely prefer my 7050. I haven't any experience running a 986 but my old boss at the CaseIH dealer used to tell me while the 10's started real good for some reason the 9's weren't so good. Compression difference maybe? I will tell you that the IH's will absolutely use more parts in the 3point and front axle area. Also the shifting and clutch areas too. These are high wear areas for IH and IH was good at taking something simple like a front axle and pour a ton of parts into their own design that no one else used. 

michael, the question is does your 986 need some repair in the near future and is it more than the tractor is worth? You already know your 986 and you would have to question if the gains are worth the risk at getting a lemon. I really bleed orange so for me I'd jump at trading. But it's like women, you get caught up in looks and end up with high maintenance. LOL

 Yep, but I have worked at an IH dealer and an AC dealer so I can claim I know the difference even if'n I don't.

What kind of hours are on each tractor? We have a 986 that has been as rock solid as could be with over 10000 hours. Just last year i finally ended up sticking some money into the TA and a few other things, but otherwise its always been one of the most reliable tractors around the farm.

My uncle had a 1086 (bought new in 81) it had over 14000 hours before any major work on it. That and a 1070 Case (also bought new) were his two "big" tractors. The 1070 burnt, but the 1086 is still owned by my cousin (it has been overhauled) and has about 16000 hours on it now. I have run the 1086, no low end at all its all turbo (986 isnt). I have a 200, basically the same motor as the 8010, it will lug way better. If I had a 986, and could trade for an 8010 I would. The IH arent near as comfortable as the 8000 series are.

If you bought the 986 new keep it. You will never get the chance to buy another new 986. If you want the Allis buy that also. When buying a used tractor you never know what you are getting for sure. You know your 986 and have had it for over 30 years. I am not a IH person but I think in time you would regret trading.

Dad and I got a 8030 and 8070.  Cabs are wonderful on them.  I know the engines are different than the 8010's but ours start pretty easy in the winter, but I always plug the diesels in. I'd think an 8010 would be a great machine.
