I just bought a 170 Allis gas tractor and was wondering if the 226 engine that it has in it,would be the same horsepower as the 226 D17 Series IV engine? Are the engine rpm's the same? I was thinking that it would be in the 52-54 hp range. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,Rick

The 170 will have about 4 more HP than a D17 series 4. The D17 series 4 was never Nebraska tested and would have only produced 48 or 49 hp at the PTO where the 170 will make 54 hp as per Nebraska test.

Rick,
I'll just add 20 more feet to the new barn here and the 170 and one of the 180s can stay at my place. LMAO

The 170 engine had a rated speed of 1800 RPM instead of 1650 in the D17 IV. It also has a comprssionratio of 8.0:1 instead of 7.2:1 in the D17 (original compression ratio is shown in the engine serial number...D17 engines end with an M, while 170 engines end in a Z, while 175 engines end with a V which means an 8.2:1 compression ratio). The carburator also has a throat diameter if 1 1/8 inches in the 170 while it was 1 inch in a D17 and 1 1/4 inches in a 175.

Wasn't there also a different gov. spring on the 175 vs 170?

No, both the 170 and 175 use governor spring 70226785. All D17's use spring 70229519.

Thanks for the info guys...I appreciate it! Don...you can go ahead and add the extra length to your new building,'cause it would be nice just to leave that WD45 of mine at your place, instead of dragging it up and down I-70! LOL! Now I need to find me a real good 4 bottom plow for the 170 and the 180's to play with. Rick

Grandpa bought a 185 new in 1978, he then bought a 4-16 Mono-Frame plow, sometimes the plow played with the tractor.

Yeah...I guess it depends on what kind of ground you're plowing though too. Sod ground that has never been plowed before or for several years will be harder to plow than ground that's been plowed every year. At any rate,it gives the tractor a good work out and that beats them just sitting around and doing nothing! LOL! Rick

Most of the time the plow and tractor were a good match but Grandpa's farm has really heavy black ground and there were times the front end would get very light.

Rick - congratulations on the new 170! You seem to have thinned the herd of older AC's in favor of new ones...I like the trend! Tobe is not far from you in the Hermann, MO area. Mike

Mike...Actually,I had gotten rid of about six tractors that were a little older here a while back and have replaced them with some newer ones. I do have a problem with getting rid of tractors though...I seem to keep buying them,so much so that I'm totally out of room, which I am right now. Thus, the reason for wanting to keep my WD45 at ol' buddy Don's place! LMAO! I suspect I'll have to build another building pretty soon...like next year maybe, but probably 2012. If I build it big enough I can have an excuse to buy more tractors to fill it up! Rick

Just in from feeding. I thought you knew who, where I was, sorry. I think I'm headed south tomorrow but I will see. Ii should be a good unit. I didn't work on it but those kinds of tractors are becomeing rare. Don, if I thought that would work I could pick up a few more, seeing as how Rick is picking up the bill that is. Tobe

Yeah,I knew you said you got on the forum once in a while, but never really thought about it...didn't know it was you. I think Don is just trying to fill up that new building of his ahead of time! LOL! Oh,Don...are you going to make a lean-to along one side of the building? Just wondering,'cause if you park my one tractor under it,will you guarantee me that the birds won't crap all over it! LMAO! They sure do that around here with the few I have under the lean-to. Of course,if I didn't have so many tractors,I wouldn't have to worry about that,I guess! Rick

Rick - you are going to have to shift the budget from tractors to more shed for a while to fix that...too bad we can't print more money to blow like the government!!! Mike

Mike...I figure that I needed to get the tractor before I worried about building me a new building. It's a real nice tractor and there's not a whole lot of them around here I've found out. Not for sale anyway. I'll be ready to build another building in 2012...another 30 X 60 with the 16 X 60 lean-to on it. That'll make two buildings the same size. If that's not enough room, then I'll just have to quit collecting...or have some of my good ol' buddies let me store some in their sheds! LOL! Rick
