4W-305 losing anitfreeze?

My nephew's 4W-305 is losing antifreeze from the radiator into the plastic containers in front. It fills the containers and runs out the top. It does not suck it back into the radiator. What would be the cause of this? Thanks for any responses. rrhead(SD)

may just be overfilling or may be blown head gasket.  The plastic tub is basically just an overflow I believe.  As coolant warms and expands it can flow into there, reversing the process as it cools.  If he isn't adding fluid when it overflows, might be blown head gasket.  Exhaust blows through blown head gasket into antifreeze passages.  The air is pushing antifreeze out the overflow into the plastic tub.

If the engine is ok and not leaking any combustion into the cooling system, closely examine the pressure cap, radiator neck, and the tubing for any damage. The overflow system depends on being able to hold a small amount of vacuum to pull the pushed out coolant back in.
You could try a block tester, one of those things that sets in place of the pressure cap and has a special fluid that changes color in the presence of combustion gases. Maybe Doc Allis will chime in here, but I know you can't go by a block tester on 6.0/6.4 Ford diesels because of the tendency of the EGR coolers to leak giving a false positive. I've also run into turbos over boosting on them pushing coolant out and not pushing coolant out once the over boost condition is fixed. Maybe it's ok to use on this application?

That happened to my car last year - was the head gasket.  Make sure it does not run dry or overheat, then he will have more problems.

I had one once that would do the same thing, slow loss of coolant.  It belonged to my friend John.  He tried  a new cap but always lost a little coolant.   We took the heads off and had them checked, they were good.  The head gaskets werent blown. Never found anything that was wrong.  We put it back together with new gaskets and were real careful to get the proper torque and retorque and double checked everything.  It didnt lose any coolant after we put it together.  Evidently there was a small compression leak past a fire ring that was presurizing the cooling system.  By the way the sleeve standout was good and level.  It ran good and didnt loose any coolant after that.   I was surprised cause we didnt find anything you could point a fingure at and say "thats wrong".   HTH

Thanks for the posts. He put on a new cap this morning and used it all day pulling a disc. There was no noticeable gain in the tanks. May have been a little bit, but not like previous days. Hope this corrects the problem. Thanks for all the advice. rrhead(SD)
