 Topic: Rotobaler experts: a dumb idea...

Hey all Roto-Baler experts, I have a question for you.
it's a dumb idea, but if I don't ask, i won't know.
Let's say I have a big mess of cornhusks, maple and catulpa leaves piled up everywhere...
If I raked 'em into rows, would a Roto-Baler turn them into consolidated bundles that'd be suitable for say...
burning in a purpose-built furnace?

Wonder if the bale would stay together with just short stuff in there? Hay rolls up nice due to the length of it. Try a few bales.

Actually the initial designers of the rotobaler envisioned it to make "bales" to burn sine there isn't a lot of firewood on the prairie. So, the opposite is true; you are a genius!!

Thanks fellers- I don't own a rotobaler, but if anyone has tried it, and has found success, let me know, and I'll start hunting for one to resurrect!

Its pretty easy to increase the amount of string that goes on the bale. More string helps. I have one i am working on now. If the snow disappears, i will try a xouple of bales, Dave

I know it works for shredded continuous feed printer paper. The only problem is you need a tractor to move the bales!

I had bought one a couple years ago to make mini bales for sale but haven’t had a chance to try it out until this fall and I mowed and raked cornstalks and was somewhat disappointed with the pickup. It just kept balling up in front of it. I’d say your biggest problem will be getting it off the ground. Mine needs adjustments wish I had someone around me that ran one for help but will try it again in straw or grass hay.

Awhile ago there was an article in successful farming magazine of a guy using a big square baler in city streets baling leaves. Windrowed them in middle of street. I’m thinking he had to add custom drop shield around the back an side pickup head to keep leaves around pickup teeth

No experience with any round baler, but lots of small squares. In the arid west always bale with the dew in the early morning. Some days you just need a few more minutes to finish a field.  Some days that turns to way more time than that. You can turn grain hay into chaff. So fine you cannot use a fork hardly to pitch it over the fence to feed. But if packed real hard, it will stay together as a bale to load and haul.
So my educated guess is damp to wet leaves could be packed into bricks. I don't know how that would work for disposal.  If stacked tight I beat you could make real good smoke signals.  |

Many years ago there was an AC service rep - Joe Dewane - deceased, who called me and knew I had an old Roto baler - he had read about a big mariuana bust in Tn and thought we might get together and try to roll the biggest stoggies on the market. The emails were pretty funny as they got to include even Alan Jones who I think is still out at Hesson.. Joe signed many of the AC service bulletins in the '70's. Just a flash back memory...
