I do several "hayrides", shows and parades every year, so I feel it's mandatory to have liability insurance on the tractor I use for the hayrides (sometimes I have several tractors in a parade with friends driving).
When I approached my insurance agent a few years ago about insuring the tractor, she ended up placing me with Haggerty Insurance and the premium was quite reasonable. I just got the renewal, and it is up to ~$200 per year. I plan to add about 5 or 6 more tractors (the ones that I take to shows), so it will definitely be going up. What do you do for liability insurance on tractors? |

This gets into a gray area, assuming you're concerned about liability in particular coming from passengers on the hayracks. Make sure your agent & Hagerty know what you might be doing with tractors on public roads. Also, is there a sponsor or someone promoting the event? Better to find out now rather than later. Premiums on these situations can go out of site to the point that they literally cancel the events. Hagerty may be well aware of the exposure and be no big deal to them, but they need to know now rather than attorneys arguing later. Good Luck. In some cases, the road exposure is different than something happening on private property. Not trying to put a damper on this but you need to know.

Are ‘Umbrella Policies’ still available? Might be something to consider, and price out.

I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

they are, and if you're gonna do rides and haul people you need one. I carry a 2 million dollar policy. It's right at $500 from my home owners insurance co. In this day and time with all the sue happy people and lawyers, ya gotta protect you and what you've worked for!

That subject brings up even more discussion. Umbrella policies are not always the cure all. In many cases they are excess over a primary limit or policy. They don't always come into play when there is no primary policy/coverage in place. Again, it's in the fine print and may vary by company. Best to have it resolved before an event

I have an "umbrella" policy as an extension of my homeowners policy. I've clarified all the things I do (tractor rides, tractor pull, equipment demonstrations and the like where I'm in control of MY equipment) I've been assured I'm covered. However I don't think I'd be covered if I was doing a hayride, as this is another type of activity altogether.
Ask your agent, they should be able to tell you what will and will not cover you in your state. I had one claim that I was glad to be covered a few years ago, where on a tractor ride someone in a car claimed a rock came from my tractor and broke their windshield. Even though the police told them it would just be considered a road hazard. It was nice to have the insurance company backing me.

If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits. If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY |

So what would be the point of collecting Allis Chalmers (or any other brand) tractors if we are not going to take them to shows, parades or do hayrides? I guess we shouldn't have GOTO's or any other kind of tractor shows. We will just restore or collect these old tractors and leave them in storage forever.
