Recently purchased a replacement as the original appeared defective with a rubber seal missing on the end. Don't know where it could have got off to but the replacement won't let me put the retainer back on , it seems too long...anybody have any experience with this?

Well , found the problem , and the missing plunger seal. It had pulled off the plunger and was planted firmly in the bottom of the plunger well. Extracted it and now the new plunger fits just fine...
