Cannot tell you the year. It is a "Z" compression code, which means 8.0 to 1 compression, which should test at 160 to 170 PSI all four plugs removed, throttle wide open, warmed up and a battery charger on the battery. As long as the compression is even all the way across, it's fine. "M" code is 7.25 to 1 compression for a D-17 tractor. With the combine's Marvel Schebler carburetor, I'd expect 67 flywheel HP at 1650 RPM's.

Tractor engines were never grey or had a fuel pump on them from the factory, so yes, it was a transplant at sometime in the past. And for accuracy, it is called the G-226 engine used in the D-17 and Gleaner E-series combine. The W-226 engine is from the WD45 and while they are very similar, they are NOT the same engine. Crankshafts and blocks are completely different.
