Hey guys, My dad is looking at a HD 5 with a loader on it and we have a question about the steering on it. When you pull back on either of the 2 steering handles it doesn't turn until you start pushing on the brake pedal for that side. Is this normal? If you pull back on both handles at the same time it stops moving so I am assuming the steering cluthes are releasing. It has sat for 4 or 5 years because the owner got sick and now passed away so we can't ask him about it and there isn't really anybody around here to ask. It is in nice shape and the tracks and sprockets show little wear and for not being run for this long it fired right up with a fresh battery and a tiny shot of ether. we ran it for about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes and shut it off and let it set for a hour and half and it fired right back up with no ether and seems to run strong. It has the scarifier frame on the back but there isn't any teeth in it. We can pick it up for $2000. Does this sound like a good price as this is our first crawler. Thanks, DuWayne

that's the way it works and you are not going to get any better on the price......you're already under scrap price!

I was hoping that was the way it was suppose to be. We figured that was a really good price but were worried about the cost of fixing the steering if it was screwed up. Thanks for the answers Lou

Sounds right and is working right. Steering clutch is manual release and has to be pulled before brake on that side will have effect on changing direction. Lever /brake steer, later machines have assist in the clutch brake use , newer or modern have progressed to joystick control of all operations.
If the machine is a loader machine watch of balance point of bucket to rear of machine, as counter-weight is needed with a full bucket.
