My tractor is backfiring. I'm in the process of getting my tractor started and not going good. My tractor has a distributor so what adjustments do I need to make to stop the backfiring and getting my tractor started?

Take the plugs out, turn the engine by hand with your thumb over the front plug hole till you feel compression build up. Now bring the engine to Top Dead Center by turning till the set screw on the front pulley is straight down. Take the dist cap off and see where it is pointing. Number 1 plug wire goes where the rotor is pointing. Now watch the rotor as you turn the engine (in the right direction I hope) and put plug wires in 1243 order in the direction of rotation.
I would bet money you have 2 wires switched around right now, which causes back firing.

I talked to a guy I worked with who is convinced that there is pre-determined numbers for the distributor cap? Is this true.

Absolutely NOT. Number one can be any one of the 4 holes depending on how the distributor is installed.

Some distributor caps have a 1 where number one should be, but if you install it wrong, 1 won't fire there.

the old way to do it was to start the tractor and run it at full throttle, with the distributor bolts loosend turn it by hand untill she runs smooth. that's how I did my WD45 and it runs perfect

Don't forget that worn points don't help your situation and are cheap and easy to replace.

Make sure your firing order is correct as Charlie mentioned. Once you determined that it is correct, give the darn thing a tune-up! Its pretty cheap to tune it up. Plugs, points, Cap n rotor & condenser and see how she runs then. Splurge and put a GOOD set of spark plug wires on it to. And not those POS sets with the push-on ends either. Might be all the old girl needs, just a little love and attention....  Heart

Forgive my ignorance, but don't all spark plug wires have push on ends? They snap over the plug? How else would you attatch them to the plug?

I'm talking on the Distributor side of the wire, not the spark plug side. The cheapo sets have a little barbed end that you install on the end of the wire. Junk. That's why most of those are $8-$10 bucks for a set of four. For longevity, good contact, and service life you want the crimp-on style like we make, or a few other mfr's so if you need to remove a wire from the Distributor cap side, you don't rip the crappy barb out of the wire jacket and the barb is now stuck in the cap....  Thumbs Down
