I am looking to swap our narrow front wd with a wide front axle.  MN salvage has an axle for $750    I am wondering - do I need the steering box along with the axle to swap a narrow to wide front ??  All the videos I see on web is the steering box with wide front axle replacing a narrow front.   Take 4 bolts off left and right side, unbolt last steering knuckle and slide assembly out - put new assembly in.

Do I need the assembly  ??   Or can I just put wide 4 bolt axle on my narrow wd. ??

Thanks for your help.

I just swapped my 49 wds from narrow front to wide front a year ago…
But I payed $150 for mine on an auction…

If you would already have a factory wide front axle, you can turn it into narrow front wheels or single front wheel WITHOUT swapping the gearbox. There is a chance, but a very slim chance, that your tractor might already have the "interchangeable" front end gearbox on it. Doubtful, but possible. Then, you'd only need the wide front axle itself, less the steering gearbox.

If you think it will be that easy, you are an optimist!

First thing I would do is spray the heck out of the four bolts on each side that hold the front bolster. Just before you are ready to remove them, give every bolt several good cracks with a 2 pound (or bigger) BFH (big fancy hammer). These bolts are very easy to twist off and very hard to get the broken bolt out.

Next, remove or at least loosen the two rear bolts and remove all the side bolts out of one frame rail. I do the left, so I don't have to fool with the belt pulley. (I have never been able to gat a bolster out without doing this.) When you get the frame rail out of the way, you will probably still have to drive something tapered (like a pickle fork) in, to separate them.

It's not a terrible job but remember that these tractors are at least 65 years old. A lot of years for things to rust together. Good luck!

To jar the 4 bolts loose use an impact on them but not with a lot of force,try to turn them in and out just to jar the rust loose.Then try to back them out,important taking off the WF,on the NF probably won't matter if they wring off.
