I am trying to install a new sediment bowl on a WD45 tank I am restoring, but it does not screw into the tank. I get one or two turns and it stops. I had an old sediment bowl from a WD45 and it also would not screw into the tank. Since it was an old one, I threaded it to 5/8 - 18. This did take off some metal. It now fits. I hate to mess with the new one unless there is no way around it. I cannot find anything in the shop manual or service manual on this topic. I do not want to force it and make it worse. The last thing I want is a gas leak!
Any thoughts on how to get this sediment bowl installed?

The tank and sediment is threaded in a tapered pipe thread size. ⅜ NPT (National Pipe Thread)

just run your npt taper tap up alittle farther if it isnt to lateit probley needed the threads cleared anyways

be warned!!!  i bought two from a national tractor parts supplier and both leaked!  they sent me one replacement and it leaked.  i then purchased two from a local small dealer and they dont leak. i tore one of the leakers apart and was able to stop it from leaking but never put on since the one i installed was OK.  i was trying to save $$ and bought the cheaper one first and then did the job like 3-4 times

Better yet just pipe the gas line out of the tank with 3/8 pipe and install an in line filter.Anything in the tank will come thru the line and go into the filter,just change filter and good to go.

The problem with that is there is no way to stop the fuel from draining out through the carb if the needle doesn't seat  properly in the carb.  Unless you fit a shutoff valve in the line.

The lack of a sediment "bowl" doesn't give you a water trap either. The in-line filter just lets the water run on thru to the carburetor.

Of course install the filter and line so the filter is the lowest point in the line then the water can be easily seen in the filter eventually water will swell the filter shut then just replace the
$1 filter.I've had water come thru sediment bowls anyway.

Thanks, Gary.  Always a good idea to have some way to shut off the flow in case of carb malfunction.
