hi, been reading here a lot, trying to stuff the brain pan with info to help me keep the ole beast useful. 

after letting it sit for years I decided I wanted to hear it run and might tackle that pesky track that wants to come off all the time. Found a couple hot batteries and the first shot of ether is all it took to fire right up n purr like a kitten. so she is up closer to the house now and will be given more attention in the future ;)

anything anybody can tell me about this beast is appreciated, I will be taking picks of the under carriage today to post so you can tell me if its worth trying to remove a link to tighten them up

I feel old today, maybe too old to tackle fixing this old beast up. I think the undercarriage is maybe worn more than I care to deal with, thing runs good and drives and blade goes up n down n ripper goes up n down, part it out or sell it outright? decisions decisions

Look at the post for the HD5 machines in your area - the track is the same on the 5 as the 6 - in fact the full rear housing is the same as are truck parts but the 6 has another roller and more links in track

would love to re-purpose the engine as it runs so smooth but think I will just sell it and concentrate on the smaller stuff, might be a 4500 Ford backhoe coming soon, guy owes me money. might be fun to restore that and let somebody else trundle around on this ole gal. if anybody wants it let me know. I was kinda excited to make it useful but I had a car fall on my arm a lil over a year ago and I am not up to things I once was, ( I know, what was my arm doing under a nissan pathfinder :P )

Dont wish to run afoul of rules here, any thing against me saying its for sale here? 

I pushed a lil dirt/trash pile with it this morning

Humm sounds a lot like the old red (IH) chunk of iron I have too. Similar thoughts! I just invested $200 in it today to hopefully get it to start and charge better. Some days I ask myself what I am doing on these projects! Guess we need something to keep busy at! Why do these old machines just refuse to give it up?

I have had a few red projects over the years, a B , H, C, 184 lowboy, Red was what we farmed with when I was a kid but we did have a case and an allis too. My Dad had john deeres as well but grampa was a farmall man. I just got a couple ferguson TE20s and love the lil buggers. 

I went out n started the HD6 just cuz I can :P I traded for the HD6 and used it some to clear land for me and the neighbor but I have no wish to put the track back on, I figured out the last time how to do it much easier, raise the whole thing up with the blade and the ripper :P maybe I should part it out? seems like somebody would rather have it complete and running like it is and I damn sure dont want to wrench it apart! maybe trade it fpor something smaller who knows. I think craigslist will see it listed soon, I am anxious to restore one of the lil fergies, the parts weigh less *winks

Taking a link out only accelerates sprocket wear. Wouldn't advise anyone to do it to any dozer...

I agree that these tracked machines require a whole new set of "BIG" tools and heavy lifting devices. The Ferguson's will be nice to restore. I like the cover for them.

Well Indy, I sure think that is a cute little guy, and think there's lots of fun to be had with it, and maybe even get a little work done.
No one is going to hang you for listing it for sale here on the construction side of things, but you'll get more people seeing it if you put it in the classifieds. Darrel

I was eager to get it usable but after looking it over its more than I want to deal with right now, I spoke to my buddy and the ford 4500 backhoe will be coming here to live, it and the fergies will take enough of my time. I will list it in the classifieds, I would accept trades as well I have around 6k in the HD6 but I dont think the under carriage is all that good even if it runs n drives, I dont thinks it worth more than 3K. I did fix the left steering brake

An HD6E that runs and turns should be worth saving. How bad is the undercarrage? If the track keeps coming off, check the front idler. Tightening the track may not be the answer.

What are you planning for the Ferguson's?

it is the front idler is it called? that the track comes off from, it appears to have decent height and shoulders on the rub the track runs on. the tensioners seem to be all the way out and there have been spacers welded in to extend it more. I myself attempted to add another shim to tension the track better years ago. the pins have some flats, I felt at least one where the bushing or sleeve was worn through but most are not I think. I found one pin welded, I see no pins that are different to be a masterlink? I have put the track back on by force and levers at least 4 times over the years. I have more rocks than dirt and its always a rock that gets in the tracks that pushes it off, usually in reverse. One of the flanges that lock the adjuster is simply not there.

 i think maybe while it will load itself maybe its time for someone else to take over the care and feeding of this beast. maybe it can bring a few others back to life with its old carcass or maybe someone has the parts laying about to bandage this old girl a while longer. It require a shot of ether to start everytime, but it roars to life everytime! When I got it the guy was backing up to turn it as it had only one steering brake. The bolts had come loose on the band. Only my wife and her small hand was able to reach down inside and retrieve the bolts. a fabricated "wrench" was used to hold the bolt heads to tighten them up. I removed the pan at that time and cleaned out tons of sludge and dirt as the valve cover simply oozed oil due to the 2 incorrect gaskets. I had to remove everything from the rear at that time, the tank, batt boxes etc.


plan to make one restorable fergie and sell the other tractor to my bud. I have used them both. Maybe funds from selling off the dozer will help make the fergies better and the 4500 ford hoe when it gets here. Can only fix so many toys :P

after reading my last post I thought I should clarify that the "pan" I removed was the skidpan under the engine, not the oil pan.

Looking at your pictures the chain does not look that bad. I have seen running dozers with pointed and bent over sprocket teeth. I've seen the chain rail height worn down so the pins are worn. I see that you shimmed the front idler to move it forward to tighten the track. I assume you did that because the adjusters are frozen. I saw an HD6 where an extension was welded to the idler screw to move it further forward. The front bolt was removed from the idler track so the idler could be moved beyond normal. The machine was still working.

You said the track comes off mostly when you are backing up. Does it come off the idler or the sprocket? I think that if it comes off the idler then you have a problem with the idler either idler bearings or idler alignment.

it was shimmed when I got it then I shimmed it more, it comes off the idler. the pads that are vertical, one on the dozer and one on the blade are almost to the point where contact is minimal. This was my reason for thinking to shorten the track by one cleat and then be able to tension it properly might be a plan. I do think it is very possible the idler is out of alignment as it appears to have more shims on one side than the other. My gas powered welder is toast and I cant find a circuit board for it so I am limited as I cannot get this close to a building where i have a welder outlet for my electric welder. if the track isn't worn that bad then why is it so long? this unit has about 6100 hours on it. I do not have the arm anymore to be hammering this thing apart, I still have nerve damage from having my left arm smushed under an SUV.

 I honestly feel i can do more with something else, I dont care for the ten foot blade, wish it was an 8. maybe it was used as a dresser?I had an opportunity to run a fairly new Case dozer and cleared a lot more trees, maybe I am spoiled now, but this AC seems more work than I want to do anymore. maybe somebody with more need for it and deeper pockets will take it over for me. I do hate to see it unloved, I have a soft spot for anything old with an engine ;)

am glad I could be of some help in getting you moving ;). I was pretty proud of myself for getting the HD6 running and moving it. 

I have to admit I am nervous running it, like I am just waiting for the track to come off again.

If I remember correctly, you measure the distance center to center on 5 track pins (pulled tight of course) and use the chart to determine the percentage of wear.  Use the link below for the wear chart to give you a better idea on how much wear there is.  At least then you'll know how bad the pins and bushings are.
