    Posted: 01 Jun 2018 at 11:26am
Hey all, I'm new to the tractor world. I've recently purchased a '57 WD45.   It ran great and everything worked perfectly. I noticed that the battery terminals were cracked and the positive was broken all of the way through. I replaced both terminals. It sparked in the process and blew two inline fuses behind the panel where the ignition switch is. They were replaced. I also noticed that the ballast just before the solenoid looked blown too. With it being a 12volt system I'm not sure if that ballast is required
However, now the motor just turns over and the carb floods, but not joy.   I'm not getting any fire to the plugs. Any ideas or thoughts?    Could I have blown a switch itself?

Possibly fried the points, bad condensor or bad coil. I assume it is battery and coil ignition and not a magneto. If by chance it has a pertronix electronic ignition installed it would probably be toast now. Your best bet is to start chasing voltage from the battery through the ignition switch to the distributor and coil. Steve at B&B is the go to guy on all things electrical on these old tractors. http://www.bb-customcircuits.com/  There are a lot of others on here that know a lot more about these than I do.

BTW Welcome to the Forum. This is the best place to get information about Allis Chalmers and just about anything else also. What part of Georgia are you in? I am just above Athens and there are several other members scattered about the state.
Just an old country boy saved by the grace of God.

You need a simple 12V test light to see where power is and power is not.

Power was lost immediately after the ignition switch. Bypassed the headlight switch and amp meter.   Fired right up.    Thanks.

Headlight switch shouldn’t matter. Ignition switch matters. When you said, “lost power right after ignition switch” did you mean was or was not on the output side of the switch?

WD45 does not use a ballast or solenoid.  It must be a farmer creation...
