A little off topic but I need a trailer to haul my tractors to shows and use to move hay. We have been looking at gooseneck trailers for a while and have narrowed it down to two brands. We can get a Gatormade trailer that is actually made in Somerset, Ky which is about 30 minutes from me or we can get a PJ trailer just across the Tennessee border. Does anybody have any experiance with one of these trailers? Is their one brand I should get over the other or anything I should know?

that solid front on the gator trailer is going to pull very hard..

I would go with the PJ trailer.
Unless your are the lead horse the scenery never changes!!

I like the PJ stuff.  Never seen the Gator, but by the looks of it, go with the PJ.  I don't like the solid front, and even if the ramps are spring assist lift, you still lift plenty and they look wide and heavy.

 
Going to buy a new flatbed for one of my trucks within the next couple days and it will be a PJ.  We have a good dealer for them just 20 minuts away.

The PJ has the 3 ramps on it which is perfect for loading and unloading my tricycle tractors.

we have that PJ trailer.  You get 3 ramps, or you get a flip up center, I think it was $200 extra for the flip up center.  We've got the flip up center, real nice for hauling hay.  The ramps are wide and I didn't want the 3rd one, as it's in the way 99% of the time.  It's alwayse easy to load the NF tractors on 2 ramps, it's a PITA to flip that center ramp every time when loading skid steers or other equipment that has to straddle it.
 
I like the powder coated finish on the PJ, don't know what the Gator has.  Here we get snow and with snow comes salt.

I'm with everyone else. The PJ would pull better with the open front.
 
We bought a Lone Wolf single tandom w/dual dollies this year and it pulls really good. It was bought about 15 miles West of Bowling Green, KY. Gave right at 5K for it. It's 20' flat and then the 5' pop up center on the dove to make it a 25 footer. Then the ramps fold over all the way and finish out the flat.
 
I built a 2X12 ramp with some bracing under it and put a piece of modified angle iron for a hook on the top and that's my 3rd ramp. It even has a little handle on the side and I just store it in the chain box on the front.

I like the PJ as well.  Once you get used to loading and unloading a narrow front tractor with only two ramps, you'll wonder why you ever bothered with the third ramp scenario.   It's just a matter of practice.   I have never heard of Gator either.   I think PJ has a bigger network of dealers.

I can load the Oliver with the 2 ramps it is my tractor that I'm worried about (WC). I won't try anyting short of 3 ramps now with the current brake condition. The hand brakes are a challenge and I will have to (dreading it) pull the rear axle and change the brake drum.
 
Thanks for the help, looks like for an extra 10 miles the PJ is definately the better trailer.

My dad bought a GATORMADE 16k 20+5 very very nice trailer very hard to beat price and very good people to deal with. The ramps are easy to lift and my old 99 F250 diesel 4x4 doesn't even know its back there! We use the trailer to haul large round bales out of the fields 11 at a time 1700lbs each around 400 bales this year. Tough trailers we also haul tractors and equipment on it also. We bought 16k because anything larger dad doesn't have CDL's and didn't want to have depend on me to pull it all the time.

OK, I have one last question. Different people have told me different things but do you have to have a CDL in Ky to pull a dual tandam trailer behind a pickup truck??

It depends on the weight you're registered for. 26001 and up requires a CDL. Then there's the are you "Commercial", or "Private" question. Actively engaged in farming, it's going to be pretty hard to claim Private. The best thing you can do is go to your state's motor carrier enforcement dept and explain in depth what you plan to do. They will tell you what you're going to need to be legal. Pretty good chance you will need a DOT number and annual inspection.

I was just looking at Gator's website and see their dump trailers use a cylinder on each side instead of the center hoist. From an engineer's standpoint, a double cylinder will lift the lightest side first (rarely do you get a load balanced). I would think this would cause a lot of twisting when unloading...and eventually cause problems.

I have 3 flat bed trailers, A 16+5 Hurst 7K, a 20+5 Corn-pro 10K and a 25+5 Corn-pro 10K. I have pulled and delt with many brands of them. I WOULD NOT TRADE A CORNPRO FOR ANYTHING!!! I have looked at all of them before i bought. The Hurst was a landlords and was cheap, it is handy for light loads and very easy to use. When doing anything where i dont need a "short" trailer I hook to the Cornpros. They are excellent trailers. The dove can be raised and will carry the weight the same as lowerd (they raise the frame work and all).  They pull great and with the tail raised the ramps will still stand straight up to hold a load of hay (or anything else for that matter) on. If you want an opinion on the PJ or the Gator, Id go with the Gator.

I have  a Gatormade gooseneck 20+5 14K that i bought in 2005.  It is a very nice trailer and it pulls really well.  The one thing i like about it over the other trailers i looked @ was the auxiliary lighting... it seems i always want to load after dark.

Neighbor has a Gator tandem dual and is a nice trailer, BUT my Moritz and a Corn Pro are better built.  In our area, Moritz or Corn Pro are top dog.  I have the Moritz with the "lay down" one piece neck and that make a huge difference when loading a tractor.  You can pull or back on a little further and not hit the front.  Nice for just a little extra room.  Mine is also a low profile which is nice for jumping up and down off of.
 
 
I bought mine from Danny Bond in Sparta Kentucky.  He is great to deal with.  Funny, drove 5 hours to get it when they are made 30 minutes from my house

I have had a PJ for 5 years, I made my own center ramp as I also have a WC. I think the PJ is a good trailer however the tires it came with are sp rated instead of
lt. The sp tires are good for only 10K if loaded lite and kept properly inflated.

I farm about 15 miles south of Lexington,Ky. and bought a new PJ 14' gooseneck dump trailer 3 years ago. I didn't have time to look at alot of brands because I needed it to haul debris from ice storm. I have been 100% happy with it. Very well made and excellent workmanship throughout it. It hass fully self contained hydraulics and because it has hoist instead of lift cylinders-It lifts to a very steep dump angle,everything always slides out.

Im in southern Indiana , and have a 24+5  2005 model Liberty dual tandem 20,000 gvw with 3 ramps in nice condition  for sale, send me a pm, A lot more trailer than either of the 14K gvws you have above , for probabaly not much more $
