Well, my G has come down with one of these summer time illnesses, much like me. I had been hearing a squeal every once in a while but laid it onto the fan belt being a bit loose. Nothing to worry about, right ? Wrong ! Now it is much worse and I'm thinking it's either the fan bearings or possibly the generator bearings but I doubt it. When I finally got it back to the trailer and shut down, there was smoke coming from under the hood but I can't see anything with the hood on. I got way over heated today so I'm not opening it up tonight, hopefully I'll have some time after work tomorrow to pull the hood and see what can be seen.
Question : Can these fan bearings be bought or not ? I remember seeing on here how someone had fabricated new pieces to hold modern bearings, is this what I'll be in for ?
Thank for any info,
Warren

I had the local NAPA put new bearings on my shaft, I think it was around $30, can't remember for sure.

Warren, don't run it hot, with a G it's a one time deal!!
The fan shaft bearing nearest to the drive pulley is #800421. The bearing on the fan end is 800420. I have used bearing #MRC488016 and bearing #MRC488503 respectively from Motion Industries or any bearing supplier. |

I just did mine last year. I paid out the ass for them. If I recall it was over $100 for the pair.

Roddo, for what these little tractors are, I'd be happy to pay $100 !
Had to call off work today, (screaming back door trots, if you know what I mean !!!!!!) so I'm feeling a bit better and decided to get the G apart. Nearly 2 hours later (and a gallon of sweat !) I have the fan shaft off. It's the rear bearing, the whole thing turning in the mount. Not completely froze on the shaft, hope this means the shaft is still good. Off to NAPA shop !

Mine had one spin on the shaft and wear it down a bit. I just peened it with a center punch a lot and the bearing pressed on well. Ive side dressed 7 acres of my little corn plot and no problems yet!

NAPA had the pulley end bearing, it's on and fine. They can't come up with one for the fan end. Gonna call Motion Industries, 40 miles away if they have one !
They don't have one on the shelf, it's coming out of Chicago, two or thrre more days I guess.........

Well, #MRC488503 is by no means the right bearing to fit a G fan shaft. Way to big to fit the mount and a bit bigger than the shaft. Now I still don't have a bearing and Norm isn't answering !

Sorry, got to vent.
I have never been so disappointed with the assistance of finding correct parts as I have trying to find fan bearings for my G. No one seems to have the correct size, even Norm sent the same 488503 bearing for the fan end. IT DOES NOT FIT PEOPLE ! I should have just let the shop guys sleave the shaft when I bought the first 488503, now I have 4 of them !!!! (One I bought, one the shop got and 2 from Norm.) Everyone must have had a new shaft made or sleaved the original because this bearing is bigger in every way. I'm way over $300 with what the shop will undoubtedly charge and my G is still sitting on the porch, unusable. I hate to think what I'll run into when I undertake to overhaul it this winter.

Ok so what are the true dimensions of the hole and the shaft? Then look for a stock bushing from Browning or McMaster-Carr or Baum Hydraulics to be a press fit in the block and a couple thousandths clearance from the shaft. Solid bronze or porous bronze?

I used some numbers I found on the YTmag site. Ended up getting me the right bearings.
Here is a copy and paste.... The fan shaft bearing nearest to the drive pulley is #800421. The bearing on the fan end is 800420. I have used bearing #MRC488016 and bearing #MRC488503 respectively from Motion Industries or any bearing supplier. Link |

Where did you go to pay $100 for those 2 little bearings? I would like to know so I can cross them off my list when I need these bearings. There is no way they are worth more than $20 a piece. |

I've been digging through all my old notes that I have saved from here, other sites, and other owners, found this a minute ago, too late to go check one of mine, but if Warren or somebody else has a set out, might be worth measuring them and comparing to these

Well, as usual, I'm wrong. Or, more confused than wrong. Maybe if I had the fan assembly here with me instead of in the shop for three weeks I wouldn't have been confused.
JoeM, your picture from Consolidated would have real nice to have had before I thought I knew what I was doing ! ha (In your first reply I think you have the numbers reversed or that's the way I read them anyway.) 488503 is for the pulley end, that's the only one Jackson Implement listed in any of their books. 488016 is the right one for the fan end.
Norm, I was particularly heartbroken when I saw the 488503 in your package but, in my defense, I didn't know the shop had already installed a 488503 in my fan assembly. I was at their shop before 5am this morning to get a look at it and try the small 488016 bearing. It didn't drop onto the shaft or into the holder but fit snug, like they ought to. They didn't get them pressed together today, extremely busy little place but I let him know I'd like it finished before Friday.
All totaled, this will cost quite a bit, two sets of bearings from Norm ( I have another shaft but need the pulley and blade.), two 488503's from Jackson Implement (they might not charge me for the second but they did order it thinking they'd remake the assembly to use the same bearing on each end...) and labor, which will likely be $40 or more.
So, I'll take my healthy serving of crow for supper and thank everyone for setting me straight.
Shall we start on the overhaul now ??
Maybe wait another month or two...

Consolidated Bearings can get any bearing known to man. They've been around many, many years. I've gotten bearings from them in the past. If you have demensions, and there's a bearing made with those demensions, they can get it! Cedar Knolls is about a 40 minute drive from my house....
