A friend has Simplicity 4040 with a male rear PTO. Was this normal or was it an option or aftermarket?

Have you tried to pull the pto shaft out? My first on came with a pto shaft sticking out of it but was just a double ended shaft stuck in the female factory pto spot. Just an idea. Den
