Yes, it needs to be timed.  If you haven't removed the governor yet I would remove the spark plugs so the engine can be easily cranked slowly by hand, with no worries about it firing.  The WC has a set screw on the crankshaft pulley that makes it easy to see where in the rotation it is.  With the setscrew pointing straight down pistons 1 and 4 will be at TDC, and with it pointing straight up numbers 2 and 3 will be at TDC.  The slot that the magneto mounts to should be horizontal in either one of these positions.  It might be fun to see how it is prior to disassembly.  If it is set to fire early then hand cranking could be dangerous.  You will notice that the governor gear rotates at crankshaft speed so every 180 degrees it is horizontal again.
 
To mount the magneto with the rotor pointing at the number one wire you need to know that number one is on the compression stroke and at TDC.  You can tell compression stroke with a thumb in the spark plug hole while you hand crank the engine and feel air pushing out, then turn until the setscrew on the crankshaft points straight down.  The timing mark on the camshaft can be seen in the second picture up from the bottom on the link I posted earlier.  I don't think there was a mark on the governor gear on mine though, just know that the magneto slot needs to be horizontal when one set of pistons is at TDC.  I hope this helps.  Tom

Tom, great restoration, nice to have a tractor still in the family truely a part of your heritage. My dad and I will be restoring grandpas wd45 someday,my dad spent most his childhood on this tractor and we consider it to be part of the family. The old 45 is in great shape, we will probably just fix some leaks and paint it, the original paint is still respectable for its age. My grandpas 2 brothers had an Allis dealership from the 40s thru the 60s so we are die hard Allis people.I have a unsyled WC I am restoring and pulling, I really enjoyed your web page. What paint did you use? What method did you use to strip the old paint off? Thanks, JM.

Thanks, I hope I can return some help for all the help I got along the way.  Sometimes I wonder if putting all those pictures on my web page gives the false impression that I know what I'm doing.  It's fun though, and that's what it's all about.  A friend of mine paints airplanes and has done a few cars etc., he gave me my painting advice when I started and told me to use PPG Delstar so that is what I used and it looked nice so I have used it on everything.  It is getting very pricey though, I just bought a gallon in April and Persian Orange 60080 in Delstar was $245 and the reducer was $80 and the hardener was another $80.
