I'm cleaning up. repainting and going thru a 720 mower deck getting
ready for next spring and have it ready for the American Thresherman show
in Pinckneyville next August which will feature Allis Chalmers.
What I'd like to do is speed up the deck speed a little bit. The zero turns, etc all have a much higher blade speed and I'm thinking that using a 1/2 inch or maybe an inch smaller driven pulley on the top of the deck would give me enough blade speed to run a little faster. I would be using the deck on my newly re-powered 720 with the B and S 23 HP engine so power should not be a problem. Will it work or too much for the spindles. Bearings are good.

The deck was designed to cut and move only so much material. I don't think speeding up the blades will make any difference. But if something is out of balance, it would shake itself to bits with the added speed.

I meant as far as will the bearings hold up to the increased speed. Best bet would be to pull the bearing number and talk to timken

I did this to a JD mower I had once on a JD 318 garden tractor. It helped but not that much. It probably wasn't worth the effort. But, it did work.

Got 2 guys that done this to 720's it worked fine. If you got bearings going bad ,then they are going to go bad anyways. One guys mowed 1 1/2 acres a week for past 5 -6 years bearing worked fine.

Bearings should be fine as they will be a stock bearing for a multiple of uses. I had a bearing go out on the spindle of my JD lawn tractor at about the same time as a bearing went out on the mandrel my Delta table saw. To my surprise they were exactly the same bearing number. The table saw mandrel probably spins 2-3 times as fast as the deck spindle.
