We have a D-17 with a 226 gas engine on our farm that we are rebuilding.  We measured the old cam, and it measures to .251" of lift, but the book says it should be .260"  The book doesn't doesn't say what the reject size is and I was wondering if anyone knew if .251" would be OK, or do we need to get a new cam? Thanks for the help.

Have your cam reground by barny Taylor and have the lifters resurfaced. You be happy with the results.  It's extra money added to your rebuild but well worth it.

Someone PM'ed me about having a new gas engine cam, but I deleted it. Wouldn't work for me because I was looking for a diesel cam. Maybe they'll see this and contact you.
I'd go with a reground/new cam if it were me. .010 missing is quite a bit in my book.

I've probably overhauled 40 or 50 of those engines over the years and never replaced a camshaft for lobe wear. Think about it....it was running just fine, right??

Yes, it was running when we decided to overhaul it, but it had massive power loss and was burning oil.  It had a bent pushrod and the pin came out of the governor weight so it was rubbing on the cover.  Also, the sleeves are egged out pretty good, you can see they are egged just looking at them.  We're starting to get it back together, but wanted to make sure we replace everything we need to before we put it back in.  Thanks for the help guys.
