    Posted: 06 May 2010 at 8:59pm
I am thinking of getting a six foot 3 point finish mower for my WD45.   I would only need to mow 3-4 acres about 5-6 times per year, so I would consider used as well as new. Any recomendations on brands: Bush Hog, Woods, Land Pride, King Kutter, Maschio, others? There's a big price range for these. Also need advice on what is a good snap coupler to 3 point conversion hitch.
Thanks,

Rick

When I bought this place, I bought a King Kutter, it lasted about 2 years mowing 10 acres. I traded it in for a Bush Hog ath99. It has been an excellent mower, I wouldn't have anything else. I have been using a WD with a 45 kit in the motor and it handles it just fine. That is a 71/2 ft. finish  mower. You really need front weights to lift this mower, it weights around 1400 lbs.  Dave.

Also I use the old Speco 3 point hitch that I posted on here yesterday. In the past, I have used a 3 point like Jim Danforth sells, it works out fine, you just need a good stabilizer on the 3 point hitch.

David,
I've already got 3 stack weights so front end should be OK for a six footer. I do like the looks of that Speco 3 point you posted, but they seem to be rare.

Hi Rick, I have a 7' Woods that has mowed my place for four years I had a 6' Rhino that was a belt eater it when through two belts a year and the Woods is just now working on the # two belt. The Bush Hogs are said to be good too. I have a "Cross" build 3 point on my WD45 it's OK I think there are better units out there. David is right about the weight of the good units, And yes you will need a good sway bar or stabilizer setup to hold it in place.

Dave & Don,
I will start watching for a used Woods or Bush Hog. I looked at some new ones last week but I think a good used one would be fine for my use.
Thanks,

I'm going to build a 3 point to snap coupler conversion hitch for the mower and just get rid of the danged old 3 point hitch all together, It's to hard putting on or taking off the tractor.

Don: Come on over here and take measurements of this 3-point. It would be easy to build, there is some improvements I would make.

Dave, I need to get up there just to look and droll some. lol
I'm going to rebuild my mower into a snap coupler hitch and do away with the 3 point hitch all together, I hate that 3 point stuff. lol
The mower is all I have with a 3 point on it, It's time for it to go!
I'm going over to Michael Crowe's farm today and pickup some new to me toys.

Woods,  I have had my 6' for probably 15 years.  The only thing I would change is I would definately get a rear discharge.

I use a "First Choice" 6 foot finish mower on my D14. It is a good fit on the D14. I had it on my WD45 for a while. It worked OK but like it better on the 14. I bought a 3 point adaptor from Tony in OR. It works great and the price was reasonable. Also with this adaptor you leave the drawbar on.

We pull a 10' Bush hog with the 45. Does nice job just have to use the hand clutch in the real heavy grass. I'd take a pull behind mower anyday over a 3 point hitch! The pull behinds flow with the ground and the 3 point hitch seem to bind the mower and the tractor up when in uneven ground. They also turn harder when in uneven ground in my book. Just my 2 cents.

I use a King Kutter 5' on my CUT, it is rear discharge and cuts real nice. I mow 2 acres with it and this is my 3rd year having it, now issues at all.

If you're only going to mow it 5-6 times a year do you really want to use a finish mower?  If you were to mow it every week and make it look nice a finish wower would be the tool, for every 2-3 weeks I'd personally use a Bush Hog, (both brand and style.)

When we sold we sold Woods.  They lasted, mowed, mulched leaves, and cut small trees.
I would highly recommend Woods.  For some reason we never sold Bush Hogs.  I do understand they are highly recommended but I have no experience with them.
Good Luck!

If you are only going to mow 5-6 times a year, I would get a Brush Hog as finish mowers don't work too well on tall grass, the belt will slip .

Well I had a weak moment and the 4020 was here and it's like a old dog if you feet it the old dog just will not leave! lol  Can I sale it to you? lol
Right now it's just yard art, It runs good but it will not pull snap coupler stuff.
I'm looking for a 190 LPG this a snap coupler hitch on it.

I have a 6' King Kutter on a WD for many years.  I've only had to replace a spindle = about $65 at TSC, usually in stock, and a belt or two.  KK has an option for a double pully/belt.  Agree that if you are mowing once a month, you might want a brush mower.  But if my KK is set up high, (using those wheel-swivel spacers) it will do well enough on rough stuff.  I also think that if you do not have a 3pt hitch, you could rig a 2-point pull for the mower - just keep it from swaying from side to side.

Using that draw bar mount under the axle, you can modify for 3pt and not "mess up" a stock looking tractor.  I use the oem lift arms w/o the snap couplers and put a clevis chain hook hung from the eyes on the end with chains to lift the 3pt arms.  Then wrap flat stock around the oem lift bar behind the seat.  Yes its a bit crude, and no the geometry is not correct for a true 3pt hitch but I've been runnign this way for a decade +.

Don, I have to defend you! I have a green thing in the shed. A Grasshopper zero turn, a 6' Del Morino rear discharge finishing mower on a D-12 Series III,  72" SOUTHERN rotory mower on a D-15II , and a 80R on a WD-45. All work well.

Seems to be some confusion, bush hog makes both rough  cut and finish mowers, I have a B H 11' finish mower and its great.

Thanks to everyone for the advice. I've got some time to consider all the options since I won't actually need the mower until next spring.
