The Allis Chalmers H3 gas was introduced in the fall of 1960 with an AC 149 CI motor. In 1963 at serial # 6001 it received the 160 CI AC motor. I believe the larger 160 CI coincided with the change to a dry air cleaner and an oval muffler at the same time.

Even the first H-3 had an oval muffler. The oval is 7" the same as the D-10/12 Series III.
I have serial 1105 (1960) I don't think the 160 cu.in. later H-3 had a dry air cleaner.

I stand corrected. Sorry. I shot from the hip. Calvin is correct in that ALL H3's had the oval muffler and also the dry air cleaner was added later after the engine was upgraded to the 160. The book by Norm Swinford states that the dry air cleaner was added when the engine was changed to 160 CI but the actual parts book shows a serial # change later in 1965 when the engine speeds were increased to 1600 RPM. I have a 1966 H3 #8961 and it does have both dry air cleaner and oval muffler although the muffler on there now is round due to prior owner could only find one like that. There is a place on side of block (hard to find)that gives serial # of engine and mine also has 160 before the serial number. It has the 6 way AC blade on it. Runs great but smokes a bit.

The serial number is located on the left side, on the torque tube or clutch housing just behind where the engine bolts in.

Look in the area of the white tape for the tractor number and just ahead of that, on the block, is the engine number. |
