Just had my 426 camshaft reground for higher lift and longer duration by Colt cams. This was his first performance Allis cam. For all you pullers out there the exhaust side is very inefficient, bad lift and duration. He said intake was little better. By improving the exh it will spool up turbo much better.
Since Colt put lot of development in cam he's looking for more business.

375.00 for regrind, 108.00 for resurfacing 12 tappets. The cam is for 3000-4000 rpms. If you go to Colt cams web sight there is little more info.

I would suppose you have to cut the pistons for valve clearance? Correct?or?

Not sure about clearance, didnt go with huge lift to keep lugging ability, but Im going to check with playdo any way.

Yeah I'd be really interested in seeing if it clears. I wonder if he could go alittle milder on profile for a farm/pulling tractor. Hmmmm...

It is more than just lift that affects the piston to valve clearance. Durations and event timing have to be considered. If the reground cam has more duration and more lift than a stock cam I would guess you will need to machine the pistons for clearance. There wasn't much room with a factory cam in it.

I always wondered how you get a 301 diesel to run good at 3000 rpm limits , I kno they run real good at 4500 rpm,s ; someone told me get the cam reground- cheap power

Still not done picking rocks, but I did check those clearances. Intake at 090, Ex at 045, I noticed when I set the lash sure had tighten up the Ex lots more. Ive read for 6000 rpm motor clearance should be 080, would 060 work for 4000 rpm motor, thoughts?

IT would be neat for a cam mfg / grinder to do baseline tests with the old stock cam designed in the 60s for a naturally aspirated engine as in the 3400 and 2800 engines to see what the difference if any would be with a modern grind in the field use engines. If the change is significant, what a business one might have...

I think there would be a nice gain in the torque of the engine, plus run cooler too!

A cam. grinding co. spec. is one thing, but the timing of the cam. in your engine,is another thing. The tolerances of the key ways in crank gears and cams gears, even the key slots in the crank & cam has an effect on timing. In my experience I have found the timing to very as much as 7 degrees, even on stock engines. That will make a lot of difference in the way an engine performs. So check the timing to make sure it's to spec. or advance it to gain low rpm power, retard for high rpm power. But always check the valve to piston Clarence.

You may be able to gain what you need by advancing the stock cam, about 8 degrees with offset key & installing stiffer valve springs, most importantly 1.75:1 rocker arms, as the stock rocker arms are 1.48:1 + stronger pushrods. But be sure to check the valve to piston clearance. The rocket arms & pushrods can be bought from Murphy's Machine in Hallsville Mo. 573 696 3655 or Kenney's Pulling parts 606 379 7490
