 Topic: 2-Row Rear-Mounted Drill Planter

Hello everyone, Need some expert information and I know this is this place to get some. I just picked up a 2-row rear-mounted drill planter in excellent shape from a nice gentleman in Frederic, WI. Totally intact and even the fertilizer hoppers and tubes are rust-free. In perusing the manual, I see that there were a series of special attachments for special tasks but I am not familiar with these types of planting applications, so a few questions: 1) What is a Cole hopper , and was that attachment from a company separate from Allis-Chalmers? 2) What is a hill-drop attachment and what was that used for? 3) Why did some planters have a small disc furrower attached right in front of the runners? Did that create a linear mound or a groove? 4) Why did they have different types of row markers for the WD and CA? 5) Does this particular planter have seed or adapter plates for planting pumpkins?
I think I am going to not try to restore this planter because it looks nice in it's original clothes, but I'd like to try it out. If you have any pictures to explain the above planting types, that'd be much appreciated. Thanks very much in advance for all of your expertise...greatly valued!

#1: Cole MFG company, now owned by Cunningham MFG, Atlanta, GA, I think, Agrisupply can get you the cole planters, Cunningham can get some parts, these were popular planters for vegetables and truck farms.
#2: Hill drop, or check wire planters used a guide wire, with special knots, spaced at a set interval, for cultivation in 2 directions. They dump seed in a hill or bunch.
#3: Single disc opener, for certain crops and soil types were better than shoe type runners.
#4: Different wheel spacings/row spacings, and the wd could pull a 4 row.
#5: JD 290 type plates adapt readily to AC planters, and you can get the adapter piece easily. seed companies can still get plates, to plant almost any size or shape seed. If you want extra spacing, you can always take some bondo, and blank out as many cells as you like, to get the spacing you want...

Thanks for the video Dan...looks like your dad is having a nice time. Your planter looks similar to mine except it appears to have different fertilizer hoppers, and has those neat discs instead of runners. Would you rate this implement as a good, accurate planter?

Great information Dave. I especially like the filling in the cells on the seed plates as I think I will need that to get the right spacing for pumpkins.

It works well. It is a plate planter so you need well graded seed with the proper plates and can't go crazy fast. It has planted corn that has yielded 200 bpa. In fact, here is a video of corn being picked that was planted by that very planter. You can see for yourself how well it works! Sorry for the tractor powering the picker. You can buy plates and adapters from Seedway. They are plastic today. You can also get false rings for thinner seeds such as pumpkins seeds. I use them for stringbean seeds I have altered many plates for various vegetable seeds. It does a great job planting. The difference in the WD and CA markers is that the WD markers raise when you lift the planter. On the CA you have to do that manually. If you look at the picture of the planter on the CA, that is a WD planter with the extra chain that connects to the latches. LOL Bob

Thanks for pointing out that difference between the planter versions for the WD vs the CA. Another difference I notes from the parts manual was the style of the snap coupler hitch bar. The CA version has a more traditional casting whereas the WD version was more aftermarket looking. Any reason for that (as it seems both versions work on either tractor)?

I know this is a relatively old thread. I have the identical planter as shown in the video, and I am need seed can covers (2 of them) and row marker attachment as well. Does anyone know where I could purchase these?

I have a 500 planter and it has hill drop. It is part of the planter units it is a six inch plastic wheels with notches. There is a flapper that holds the seeds till they hit the notch

That is a great looking rig. I think of all of the cast weights that Allis had, the rear wheel weights for the CA are the best looking.

Welcome to forum. No number that’s how they are referred to in manuals and parts books. Unfortunately in parts books most updates go by years manufactured. But guys on here with good knowledge can help a lot by seeing pictures. If I were you I’d post a new question with pictures in farm equipment section and when you get some answers and info put a post in classifieds section asking for the part your needing

Once you have the model you can search eBay for or parts and used seed plates.
