OK, my Buda powered AC forklift has a fair amount of 'blowby' ...smoke coming out of the oil filler cap. Need opinions of what is causing it, what to do about it and the bottom line what's it going to cost ???
I have to start her up with ether unless she's warm....yeah, another 'problem'...but she's a valuable member of my A-C family!

Do a compression test, likely a lot of blow-by from worn rings. New valve seals and guides might help, if that motor has 'em...

Is it a 4 cylinder or a 6 ??? One of them in a diesel is a rare bird.

She's a diesel 4 cylinder.Ain't got a lot of driving power but will lift over 5000# without complaining!
'Rare', eh ! Sounds like someone might want to buy it ?
Problem is she's super handy around here, though a gas equal would be OK too.

update...used two spray bombs of brake cleaner to get some of the black crud off the engine. Can't find an engine plate anywhere, but I was told it's a Buda.
4 cylinder diesel with one glowplug in the intake.
I'm wondering if it's a good/OK idea to plumb the blowby into the air cleaner ? It'd sure keep the engine a lot cleaner !
all ideas welcomed !

With the hard starting, I would bet it has weak compression - needs a rebuild. My 190 XT is the same way. Needs ether on the hottest day of the summer. A rebuilt would also clean up what is coming out of the vent pipe. Plumbing in vent tube into the air cleaner? I'm biting my tongue to what I really want to say about that! Some gaskets and tightening all the bolts (believe it or not!) on that engine would help keep it clean.

If the oil pressure is good you could really improve this engine with a new set of piston rings (the pistons may not be reusable).....and a gasket set....cost would be kept to a minimum. Re your question to plumb the blow-by to the intake I would say do it. I've done this to two 3204 Cat engines and it works perfectly fine. That blow-by smoke would make me sick to my stomach after a few hours of operation....but not any more.
