Now this is what i call deep plowing , hard to believe one bottom plow can make a trench this deep . Person could get hurt falling into dead furrow.

A lot of this was done in California. I have never been privy to the reason that it is done.

There is a plow like this at the Flywheelers in Florida. They do a demo each day of the show but with two crawlers chained together. Sandy ground

There are a number of articles and studies by several universities which can be viewed by simply searching "Deep Plowing". Essentially certain soils that are deep plowed produce an increased yield along with better root penetration , an important need when planting groves of fruit trees, etc.

Some of the flooded farm land in Manhattan, KS area was "tilled" with such plow after the July 1951 flood. Never saw it in operation, but did see where it was being used. One of problems was plowing the ncessary depth, which varied with flooding irregularities. |

When the levy along the Wabash south of Terre Haute broke a few years back some farmers went together to buy one of these so they could pull up the good soil to mix with all the sand that was washed in. Those who did not are still having trouble raising crops on that sand. Jim

Farm north of me had a lot of sand after the floods of '73 and '93, they did not use a deep plow but a deep chisel for lifting buried topsoils and kind of tearing the sand patches up, was almost as long as those cable setting plows on crawlers but five tools wide.
