    Ok guys, Thought we should post up some pictures of the HD5 before it goes under the restoration wrenches. So the quiz is what are all the differences between the HD5 and 6??. Please feel free to post at will,early and often.

	obvious differences in your photos and machines in general HD5 has detroit 2-71 and carco model E winch. HD6 is a early one with Buda design HD344 engine and carco E24 winch. Winchs ccould be swapped early to late vice versa etc E24 was replacement for E and then later E30 winch replaced E24. HD6 has heavier and longer front chassis rails than a HD5 to accomodate the motor. Back ends are the same up until HD6 13390 when the steering clutch plates were changed to bronze from raybestos; and final drive shaft splines changed too. HD344 was replaced with the 6000 motor at 13322 also hydraulic pump, tank and valve were combined here and a oil master clutch became a option a bit later. Then wet backend E and EP models after 14484.

	The radiator and radiator guard are different. The HD6 has a front bumper. Minor but different.

	The heavier frame rails on the 6`s are drilled and tapped for their tilting nose cones which the 5`s dont have. Blade lift cylinder mounts only came on the heavy 6 nose. Firewall/cowling is different as are the hoods to suit the different nose cone options

	Wonder how much a new HD6 would cost today if they were still being built? The 6 was a very nice machine, credit to Van Dobeus AC Chief of Construction Engineering 1944.

	12 volt starting on the HD-5 versus 24 on the HD6? My HD5 is 12, my 6's are 24 volt.

	HD6 has a guard underneath the radiator, the five does not. Radiators are different between the 5 and 6. The 5 has an hour meter located on the outside of the battery box. The 6 has 6 bottom rolls and the 5 has either 5 or 4. Outside pushbeam on the 5 is terminated back by final on the 6 it is terminated further forward. The gauge cluster on the dash is different between the 5 and 6.

	Hey AC Mel Thats a real nice HD6, I had one the same S/N11855 with 4 roller track frames and an Aussie made McKee winch. HD5's with 4 roller track frames run 33 link chains whereas 4 roller HD6's run 34 link chains. HD6 dozers with 5 roller frames run 37 links. All the same pitch chains. Ex factory all HD5's dozers (apart from some of the very last HD5G traxcavators) run 5F1R gearboxes whereas HD6's dozers have a pretty even mix of 5F1R and 4F2R. 4th forward is dropped out of the 5F box in favour of an extra faster reverse. Very early HD5's had completely different longer pitch chains and sprockets but I doubt many would still be around in original form. That HD6 must be a real early one because the dozer blade hyd' cylinder cradles (double oscillating bracket that mounts the cyl' to the nose mounts) is shorter than later models and cannot be reversed. Later models could be reversed so that the hyd' cyl' could be moved back and forward to accomodate 4 or 5 roller track frames. Good luck with the resto' job on your 5

	Great job guys, everyone who has taken the quiz certainly has A+. It looks like we can make copies and keep with service/parts manual for reference. This is better than some of the AC service bulletins that we have. So this picture is of the cutout in the HD5 fenders, they line up with 3 holes on each side, They are on fenders of both models,5, 5Gs, can't find anything in the parts or service manual as to there purpose, this is for extra quiz points. Anyone know? Coke you out there?

	G'day AC Mel Those holes are to run fuel or oil hoses through if you want to fit or have factory fitted heavy duty AC oil and fuel filters. My Dad's HD6E S/N12885 had both filters on it originally now just the engine oil filter. The big heavy duty filters were mounted on fender extenders and AC even made a bolt on guard to protect the hoses where they passed under the fender and into the filter. I will try to attach pictures -- haven't done it before, might need some guidance. Real early HD6's had fenders like on the 5's even with the cut out on the folded down edges. Cheers

	On the HD5B the mount of the dozer blade could be to the rear axle housing or to the truck frame - depending on the after market blade mfg. The 5 G had the longer truck frame and the 5 rollers but on some 6 machines they used another roller and 2 more track links. The sprung track frame on dozers was different as the 5G used a solid bar across truck frames and to attach to machine .

	my HD5 track loader had a 371 in it!

	Our HD-5 came with a fitting to lube the rollers. Our HD-6 had sealed rollers.
