guys im thinking about ordering an engine rebuild for the 45 where would you guys suggest getting an engine kit from? and also could i get a d17 rebuild kit to put in for some extra ponies? thanks justin

A D17 kit will not have all the exact parts you will need to rebuild a 45.

okay well most of the rebuild kits include the 4 1/8 over bore so that should come with all the things needed to rebuild?

If your engine is tired, you will find that the rebuild to specs will gain the most ponies. We can increase compression, but unless you have a real purpose for the extra gains, I recommend you rebuild close to factory. The 1/8 of an inch in our kits will gain a little, but don't go looking for 55hp without a few other things to help.

i pull my 45 and i pull it ad i want to get to 65 70 hp i am goin with the 4 1/8 pistons what else can i do ? does a 170 head fit?? also i found a company that sells roller rockers and opinions will be helpful

Just put flat top WC pistons in it. It will up the compression ratio. A 170 head won't make any difference in HP. The heads are flat on the working side.
You can always start putting REAL money in it and have the cam ground and the crank stroked to get that 70+ HP. At standard RPM, I doubt roller rockers will do anything for extra HP. Edited by CTuckerNWIL - 27 Aug 2012 at 8:22pm |

I mean absolutely no offense and would be happy to sell you a kit, they are listed on our website, or you can call. However, please realise that with performance, usually comes unreliability. I can tell you how to get all the HP out of your engine you can imagine, and I have more than just a few customers that are undefeated in pulling. But they had deap pockets, and were willing to start all over when something went wrong.
I also had a customer that built more power into a B than I have ever seen. I could idle his tractor in 3rd gear across the lawn, and throttle up. It would ride a wheelie for far longer than I had the guts to do, especially since I wasn't aware it would do it. The reason I was testing his tractor was because he died behind the wheel of it. They found him in the field dead with the tractor standing straight up on the drawbar. Learn about what you have before looking to make it something else. Asking about a D17 kit is a dead give away that you do not know the details of the 45 engine compared to the 17. I will gladly walk you through the process, but be prepared to spend more than you thought you would. If the engine is weak figure out why. How has it performed in pulls so far? In my pulling, I never ran out of HP, only traction. There are fellas on here that have been rebuilding these far longer than my 12 years professionally, so maybe they can pop in with some better advise. JimD

If you want those numbers with low compression. Follow the 403 moline. If compression isnt a concern go 12.1 static on the 4 1/8 bore and youll make the number also.

The difference is in the main bearings and the crankshaft. 17 is heavier built.

Sorry, I didn't have notifications turned on for this thread. Yep, the mains are wider on the D17. Everyone wants to put a "D17" kit in their WD or WD45. Funny thing is, putting a WD kit in your 45 will get you gain, not the other way around due to piston height.

so how much gain will you get if you put flat top pistons in a 45 block ? do you use wd or wc flat top pistons just wondering cause I have my engine tore down to rebuild but was going to leave the stock 45 pistons and crank in it

can you weld up the dish in the wd-45 pistons I noticed that the piston does not come all the way to the top of the cylinder so would wd flat top pistons be the same as the 45

You wouldnt want the piston parked at tdc zero deck height unless it had a really deep large dish cause the distance down in the bore or the dish is the only combustion chamber area you have.
