Got my first Allis. It's a '52 CA. Needs the pedestal seal replaced. Surely somebody has done this before. How big of a job am I in for? Easy/hard?
Second question. I want to get a good shop manual for the CA. Suggestions? I've looked at the generic repair manual on the shelf at the local tractor store, not impressed. I want something that is very detailed with all the specs and lots of diagrams/pics. Who makes the best repair manual?
Third question, what is considered the best paint to get that will be true AC orange? I'm pretty sure Lowe's & Home Depot can mix Rustoleum to any color you want. Does anybody know the code for Allis Chalmers orange? As I remove are replace parts, I want to clean and paint it the right color. Figure in time it will be the correct orange again (previous owner smeared a non-AC orange all over it).
Thanks. I'm new here and am looking forward to getting to know my CA and spending some time on the forums.
Bill

You got a good one. The CA is a versatile, powerful small tractor. (I have a SC '54)

Assuming it is a narrow front. Remove the four bolts holding the pedestal to the top. Remove the gear on the top and pull the shaft down and out the bottom. pry out the dirt seal and oil seal and replace them. make sure the axle is trailing when you put the shaft back in. If you wonder why check out the front wheels on a shopping cart. See what happens when you try to keep the trailing axle out front. |

If you want paint mixed you are probably looking at an expensive proposition since it will likely be auto grade paint. You want old AC Orange called Persian Orange.
It is difficult to find. I am satisfied with some stuff I buy through Valu Bilt tractor store online and Orschelin Farm stores in our area. VanSickle brand paint, it is priced similar to Rustoleum. There are many opinions on what is closest to the old color. Some Agco dealers also have the old color but it is overpriced in my opinion. Recently someone did a sprayout comparison of rattle can paints. That will give you some idea of the variety of shades out there. If someone has it they may repost on this forum. |

This is a link to a page on the old forum. The topic of paint colors appeared many times in that forum and I am sure it will again on this one...
