I have the crank from my 42 WC and it has some serious rusting on it. A couple of the bearing surfaces are rusted quite bad. It soesn't seem to be pitted but is a deep rust. I don't have a shop around here that I can get to without going a long distance. Was wondering anyones thoughts on this. I want to rebuild this engine and would like to use this crank. I am not familure witht his process, but I do know that tolerances have to be such that it will run properly. Thanks. Roger.

There is not much you can do with it unless you have micrometers and know how to us them and a way to grind the journals. In order to get an engine kit, you need to know the finished size of the journals after polishing. The journals need to straight and round and either original size, .010 under or .020 under. Most kits these days don't go to .030 or .040 under anymore.

Gary, thanks I didn't know they were there. I did know of Ormsbee implement in Afton sout west of there. Both are a drive of 2hrs one way from me. I will call them and see what they think. CT I wish I could post pics but I can't get the size right even by using an outside source. If I could I could show you the amount of rust. Iw ill try them and see. Maybe the wife will wnat to take a ride next Monday. Supposed to be a nice day then.
Thanks. Roger
P.S. Gary where are you in DA UP? We go to Paradise quite often in the summer and then in the fall to Bear hunt.

O1 the only way is to get it to a machine shop that can measure it . if it can be ground I sure do recomend it . It's not that expensive to have them grind your crank -- then order the bearings from them at the same time As you put it together use plastigauge to check everything and you will have a first class job!!! P S the shop may be able to polish it and make it work only they can tell you.

Roger, Gabes shop is 2 + hours from me too. I have been there once and checked out his setup, and met Gabe . I have complete confidence in him , his advice, and his machinist. My MAC tool guy told me about this shop several years ago when I was griping about the lack of a good machine shop here , and he shuttles parts for me at no charge, so I have a good deal going.
I am 5 miles N of Rudyard in Chippewa County. I would be on your way to Brimley.
Where do you hunt bear? with dogs? Didn't fill my first season tag last year, took 7 points to get a tag. Last tag I filled was in '94. 383 # dressed, 20 5/16. Edited by Gary in da UP - 19 Apr 2012 at 7:30pm |

We hunt with dogs near Paradise. Didn't tag one last year but got one in 2008. First bear ever at 180#. My sisterinlaw holds the state record form 1997 with I believe was 26 1/8? not sure now. I am going to call him Monday to see if I can take it up and have him look at it. I have to take my son's WC to afton to the dealer there to have them look at it. It developed a knock after we cleaned it up and got new oil, gaskets, etc. in it. Wasn't doing it at first then all of a sudden it started. Thanks. Roger
